On the 27- 28 May 2026, BRB in collaboration with WLSA and Mokhotlong CGPU, conducted community sensitization sessions at Matsoaing and Maboloka with the support of World Vision. The discussions focused on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), referral pathways, child marriage, child labour, HIV/TB, CLM and inheritance rights.

During the session at Matsoaing, parents highlighted key challenges affecting their community, including high school dropout rates, teenage pregnancy, and r**e cases. Possible solutions were discussed, and the team, together with the community members, agreed to work collaboratively to address and reduce these challenges.

The key takeaways from the issues discussed are that early reporting of sexual and gender-based violence is crucial, as it allows survivors to access health, legal, and psychosocial support. Proper family planning also plays a key role in improving maternal and child health, and decisions around it should involve both men and women. While customary marriages are recognized under traditional and cultural practices, consent from both parties is essential, and registering these marriages helps protect the rights of both spouses and children.

Team Mokhotlong conducted a Facility Manager Survey at Linakaneng Health Centre, a hard-to-reach facility located deep in the mountains between Thaba-Tseka and Mokhotlong. The survey aimed to identify gaps in healthcare service delivery and explore ways to improve access to quality healthcare services for adolescents and young people, particularly in remote communities.

The team then proceeded to Motsitsaneng village, where they conducted the Community Tool activity in collaboration with a Youth Mentor from Baylor and a Peer Educator from Sentebale. This activity created an important platform for engaging with community members and gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges young people face in accessing healthcare services.

Key findings from the Community Tool activity revealed that adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Motsitsaneng often prefer using traditional herbs instead of visiting health facilities due to the long distances to clinics and prolonged waiting times for services.

Through the continued partnership between BRB, Baylor, and Sentebale, we remain committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of distance or terrain, has access to quality healthcare services, while also ensuring that community voices are heard, valued, and represented.

Success Story: Breaking the Language Barrier at Seboche Mission Hospital in Botha Bothe District

At Seboche Mission Hospital, an adolescent girl visited the hospital seeking medical assistance. Upon entering the consultation room, she encountered a major challenge — a language barrier between herself and the attending doctor. The consultation was conducted entirely in English, making it difficult for her to fully understand the questions being asked or clearly explain her health concerns.

Although the young girl attempted to communicate, she struggled to articulate herself effectively because English was not her strongest language. As a result, she left the consultation room without properly presenting her problems or receiving the support she needed.

During a routine engagement through client survey tool at the facility, the District Coordinator, Mme Tlalane Raliengoane, interviewed the adolescent girl about her experience at the hospital. Through the discussion, the young girl disclosed the difficulties she had faced during her consultation and explained how the language barrier prevented her from expressing herself confidently.

Recognizing the seriousness of the issue, Mme Raliengoane immediately intervened and mediated between the adolescent girl and the Doctor. The girl was taken back to the consultation room for a second assessment.

During the mediation, the doctor acknowledged that he had communicated only in English because he assumed the adolescent girl could comfortably express herself, particularly because she was wearing a school uniform and appeared articulate. However, the assumption proved to be incorrect.

The healthcare provider then allowed the adolescent girl to communicate in her home language, which immediately improved the interaction. She was finally able to openly explain her symptoms, concerns, and challenges without fear or confusion. As a result, the doctor gained a better understanding of her condition and successfully referred her to the relevant department within the hospital for further assistance and appropriate care.

This experience highlighted the importance of client-centered healthcare services, effective communication, and avoiding assumptions based on appearance or educational background. The intervention not only restored the adolescent girl’s confidence but also ensured that she accessed the healthcare services she needed in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.

Meet Karabelo Zanele Sekali, a passionate District Coordinator based in Qacha's Nek whose commitment to serving communities continues to make a meaningful impact , especially in hard-to- reach areas.

Ms. Sekali plays a vital role in coordinating CLM project implementation at district level, ensuring that quality health services are accessible to adolescent girls and young women in health facilities and communities. From consolidating and analyzing data from clinics and hospitals , supervising her team and supporting advocacy efforts, her work helps strengthen community voices and strengthen service delivery .

One of the biggest lessons she carries in her work is the importance of teamwork and shared vision. She believes that when a team works together with the same purpose, no challenge is too difficult to overcome .

What makes Ms. Sekali stand out is her resilience and commitment to the field work. She proudly describes herself as a "mountain wolf" - someone who is always ready to take assignments in the most remote areas and still deliver results without fail.

Beyond work, Ms. Sekali enjoys retail therapy and spending quality time with her family , which helps her recharge and stay motivated. Her flexibility and ability to adapt to different roles continue to make her a valuable asset to her team and BRB.

The other three pictures were taken during field work at Lebakeng Health Centre, a facility considered one of the hardest to reach. Accessing the area often requires travelling by horseback or helicopter, which perfectly reflects Karabelo’s passion and dedication to serving even the most remote communities.

We appreciate Ms Sekali for her outstanding work and unwavering commitment to advancing the mission of Bacha re Bacha through her passion, leadership, and dedication to serving communities.
