Success Story: Breaking the Language Barrier at Seboche Mission Hospital in Botha Bothe District
At Seboche Mission Hospital, an adolescent girl visited the hospital seeking medical assistance. Upon entering the consultation room, she encountered a major challenge — a language barrier between herself and the attending doctor. The consultation was conducted entirely in English, making it difficult for her to fully understand the questions being asked or clearly explain her health concerns.
Although the young girl attempted to communicate, she struggled to articulate herself effectively because English was not her strongest language. As a result, she left the consultation room without properly presenting her problems or receiving the support she needed.
During a routine engagement through client survey tool at the facility, the District Coordinator, Mme Tlalane Raliengoane, interviewed the adolescent girl about her experience at the hospital. Through the discussion, the young girl disclosed the difficulties she had faced during her consultation and explained how the language barrier prevented her from expressing herself confidently.
Recognizing the seriousness of the issue, Mme Raliengoane immediately intervened and mediated between the adolescent girl and the Doctor. The girl was taken back to the consultation room for a second assessment.
During the mediation, the doctor acknowledged that he had communicated only in English because he assumed the adolescent girl could comfortably express herself, particularly because she was wearing a school uniform and appeared articulate. However, the assumption proved to be incorrect.
The healthcare provider then allowed the adolescent girl to communicate in her home language, which immediately improved the interaction. She was finally able to openly explain her symptoms, concerns, and challenges without fear or confusion. As a result, the doctor gained a better understanding of her condition and successfully referred her to the relevant department within the hospital for further assistance and appropriate care.
This experience highlighted the importance of client-centered healthcare services, effective communication, and avoiding assumptions based on appearance or educational background. The intervention not only restored the adolescent girl’s confidence but also ensured that she accessed the healthcare services she needed in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.
