Zorzor City, Lofa County – 24 January 2025

James Papy Kwabo, Jr., founder and former General Manager of the Alternative Youth Radio, served as Guest Speaker at the graduation ceremony of the second cycle of the Boleylabo Professional Skills Training Program in Zorzor City.

Twenty-four community members completed training in vocational skills including soap making, handcrafts, interior decorating, cake making, beauty, and hair care. Speaking to the graduates, Mr. Kwabo encouraged them to remain focused and to organize into professional groups, saying collective effort strengthens unity, attracts support, and creates employment opportunities within the community.

The ceremony also included the announcement of plans to support fifty additional students in the next training cycle, ensuring the continuity of the program.

“It is always humbling to see the people’s trust and warmth,” Mr. Kwabo said. “Our work has always focused on staying present, sharing skills, and helping our communities grow together.”

The Boleylabo Professional Skills Training Program has become a key initiative in Lofa County, providing residents with practical skills to contribute to local development and economic growth.

Mr. James Papy Kwabo, CEO and founder of the JPK Foundation, recently visited the residents of Wakesu Town to meet, for the first time, a young girl who had suffered severe burns from a fire. The girl was taken to Zorzor Current Lutheran Hospital for advanced medical treatment.

The decision to assist with her medical bills and provide other necessary materials came after a son of the community reached out to Mr. Kwabo. The community members and the girl’s family explained that, due to financial constraints, they were forced to keep the girl confined at home, unable to afford the advanced care she needed.
In the video below, the girl’s mother shares her story.

Today is a notable occasion when elders, women, and young leaders came together to honor Mr. James Papy Kwabo, founder and CEO of Alternative Youth Radio and the JPK Foundation. The birthday celebration took place in the Zeeyeamai Clan, Zorzor Administrative District's. The program brought together nearby villages and towns .

To help the celebration, the event included a sincere tribute of Mr. Kwabo with cattle, customary clothes, and several food and non-food supplies. Four teams took part in a fierce two-day tournament. In the spirit of developing young people's skills and abilities through sports activities; Zeemai Town won against Borkeza, the host town, today during the grand final play off.

The elders claim that Mr. Kwabo's birthday anniversary is a unique event picked to commemorate the great influence he has had in the community, and not just a regular celebration as some could guess. The program was emotive; many shared stories on the profound impact he has made in the lives of the people and in the society. The Faculty Association of Lofa County University, under Mr. Francis Kpadeh, among others, graced the event in harmony and solidarity with the Celebrant.

In an emotional and touching message read,Mr. Kwabo reflected on his former impairments and admitted the public's curiosity in bringing hope to society, the next generation, those living with impairments, and promoting education for everyone. He shared stories of his childhood agony and wheelchair days.

The life narrative of the CEO is a clear evidence that one's condition is not permanent; instead, it is one's resolve and desire that keep a person moving on and growing more robust.

Many times I am advised against taking public roles owing to my age. I advise them that should it serve the community, I am ready to give my life; yet, the redemption of the next generation is a need, he stated.

Mr. Kwabo told the public that he is not a politician but a leader whose mission is to find solutions to the challenges facing communities rather than allocating blame, which only breaks peace and causes upheaval.

Our Story

Youth Talk-Liberia (YOTAL) Incorporated is a national youth organization established in 2014 in Northern Liberia to advocate for the wellbeing of youths in rural parts of the Country.

Since its establishment, the organization has continued to help young people denounce violence, and adopt acceptable societal attitudes. In so doing, it undertakes academic and social activities such as quizzing, soccer matches, debates, and intellectual discussions on perennial problems. In

To date, the youth-group has provided hands-on training in media advocacy, peacebuilding etc. for thirty young people and employment for fifteen of them. On the overall, YOTAL has impacted more than ten thousand residents in the Northern county by working with children and other young people to provide volunteer community services in the areas of waste management education, peacebuilding and the provisions of job opportunities for young leaders.

So that it reaches youths wide and far, the organization, established in 2016, Liberia’s first youth radio station called: Alternative Youth Radio situated in Lofa County, Northern Liberia. The station which serves a population of more than two hundred thousand listeners in seven of Liberia’s fifteen counties, uses its Youth Talk-Liberia program as a platform for young people to speak out on issues that concern them, advance ideas to sustain the peace, security, rule of law and youth participation in decisions on issues of governance, education, the environment, gender equality, sustainable development, among others. Particularly, the FM station helped to propagate efforts in implementing the youth-related Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. To date, the intervention continues to help maintain the atmosphere of creative thinking among young people which is an attribute of leadership - while enabling them to refrain from violence.
