Equipping Local Communities with Knowledge of the Dangers of Gold and Diamond Smuggling and Promoting Sustainable Natural Resource Governance for National Development.

Liberia’s natural resources, particularly in the mining sector, have the potential to drive national development and alleviate poverty if managed responsibly. However, the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) subsector faces numerous challenges, including weak regulatory enforcement, tax evasion, cross-border mineral smuggling, exploitative labor practices, and significant environmental and social issues.

To address these governance deficits and promote sustainable resource management, the Community Sustainable Development Alliance (CSDA), in partnership with Green Advocates International, the Liberia National Police, the Liberia Immigration Service, and the Ministry of Mines and Energy, supported by the GIZ Regional Resource Governance Program, conducted a week-long anti-smuggling awareness campaign in six ASM-affected communities in Grand Cape Mount and Gbarpolu Counties.

This initiative aimed to build the capacity of key stakeholders, including mining agents, border security personnel, miners, local authorities, and grassroots communities, to strengthen vigilance against illicit mineral flows and promote legal compliance and transparency. Through sensitization sessions, community dialogues, and stakeholder engagements, the campaign highlighted the negative effects of gold and diamond smuggling on revenue mobilization, local development, and environmental sustainability. It also emphasized the socio-economic benefits of formalization, legal adherence, and community involvement in resource governance.

CSDA is equipping local actors with the knowledge and tools needed to combat mineral smuggling while advocating for responsible mining practices to enhance the developmental impact of the mining sector in Liberia. Strengthening Stakeholders’ Capacity in Liberia’s ASM Subsector!

To address the challenges facing Liberia’s Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) subsector, the GIZ Regional Resource Governance Program (ReGo), with funding from the European Union, supported Community Sustainable Development Alliance in Africa and its network institutions in organizing a three-day joint training for national stakeholders in the ASM subsector.

This training aimed to empower civil society practitioners, community-based organizations (CBOs), border security personnel, and mining community members to enhance compliance, curb mineral smuggling (gold and diamonds), and strengthen governance in ASM operations. The training focused on the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Mineral Supply Chains, EU Conflict Minerals Regulations, and the fight against Terrorist Financing, Money Laundering, and Illicit Financial Flows within Liberia’s ASM operations.

The training was conducted simultaneously in the Western and Eastern Mining Regions. One session took place in Bopolu City, Gbarpolu County, with participants from the Western Region, which includes Montserrado, Margibi, Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu Counties. The other session was held in Ganta City, Nimba County, with participants from the Eastern Mining Region, representing Nimba, B**g, Lofa, Grand Gedeh, and Grand Bassa Counties.

This initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing accountability, transparency, and responsible mining practices in Liberia for sustainable development. UNDP Liberia USAID/Liberia West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) European Union in Liberia Open Society Foundations

Ensure Your Programme Success Through Partnership.

Liberia’s development relies on the collective efforts of all sectors, not just the government. To support national initiatives, development partners have been investing in Ministries, Agencies, Commissions, and national NGOs to help implement both national and international development agendas at the national level through projects and programmes.

Unfortunately, many of those projects have failed to achieve their intended goals or objectives during implementation, leading to significant financial losses, wasted resources, and unmet development outcomes for partners. These setbacks undermine the desired social, economic, and environmental benefits at the national level.

Project failures across sectors also delay the achievement of development goals, exacerbating social inequalities, and worsening conditions in local communities. In some instances, they can trigger political instability and foster community resistance to future interventions, as currently observed in some areas of the country. Project failures erode stakeholders' confidence in development programmes and initiatives from both the government and civil society organizations (CSOs).

Factors contributing to project failures include poor project planning and scope definition, limited capacity of implementing partners, inadequate risk management, ineffective communication and stakeholder engagement, weak project management and leadership, etc.

The good news is that project failure is preventable. Partner with us and leverage our competent programme experts to achieve your programme goals and broaden your initiatives' impacts. Community Sustainable Development Alliance (CSDA) in Africa.

Embracing Change for Enduring Impact!

Over the years, our organization has proudly served the larger community under the name “Peaceful Youth Association for Transformation (PYAT), Inc.” This name has been a source of pride, attracting numerous recognitions and opportunities while we diligently fulfilled our mission.

However, as our activities have evolved and the landscape of community development has shifted, we recognize the need for strategic realignment. This necessitated a comprehensive strategic planning process, culminating in the renaming of our institution from “Peaceful Youth Association for Transformation (PYAT)” to its current designation, the “Community Sustainable Development Alliance (CSDA) in Africa.” This change reflects the organization’s programmatic maturation and our commitment to a holistic community-centric approach to sustainable development.

To our esteemed partners, donors, followers, and the wider community, we are pleased to announce that from now on, our organization will operate under the name “Community Sustainable Development Alliance (CSDA)” in Africa. We deeply value your collaborations and the support we have received over the years. As we continue this chapter, we remain committed to forging even stronger partnerships as we continue to deliver lasting impacts within our communities.

The rebranding to CSDA represents more than just a name change; it embodies our broadened scope and renewed commitment to sustainable development.

We are enthusiastic about the journey ahead and look forward to your continued support as we strive to build a more peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future for communities in Africa.

Thank you for being part of our journey. We are excited to strengthen our alliance with you as we advance our shared goals under the banner, Sustainable Development Alliance (CSDA)”.
