Empowering Youth Potential for Accountability and Digital Governance

Earlier this month, Youth Transforming Africa Narrative (YOTAN) hosted a one-day youth dialogue focused on “Empowering Youth Potential for Accountability and Digital Governance.”

The dialogue brought together young people for an open and engaging conversation with representatives from the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) and Accountability Lab Liberia, who served as panelists and shared their experiences, perspectives, and insights on the role young people can play in promoting transparency, accountability, and responsive governance.

Rather than simply listening, young participants actively engaged the panelists, asked questions, shared their experiences, and explored practical ways to use civic participation and digital tools to influence governance and hold institutions accountable.

Key conversations centered around:

The role of young people in preventing corruption and promoting integrity.

How digital technology can strengthen citizen participation and access to information.

Opportunities for young people to become active accountability champions within their communities.

The importance of youth voices in shaping transparent, inclusive, and responsive institutions.

Moving young people from being passive observers of governance to becoming active participants and solution-builders.

At YOTAN, we believe that Liberia’s young people are not simply the leaders of tomorrow—they are citizens and changemakers today.

When young people have the knowledge, platforms, networks, and tools to participate meaningfully, they can become a powerful force for accountability, innovation, and democratic renewal.

The dialogue was held as part of YOTAN’s Local Engagement for Accountability and Democracy (LEAD) project, with grant support from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). Strengthening Citizen-Powered Accountability for Better Governance

During the week, Our institution convened a day-long technical workshop with representatives from national civil society organizations, key government institutions, and members of our Social Audit Clubs to strengthen the Liberia Accountability Meter Portal (LAMP)—a digital social accountability platform designed to power citizen participation, transparency, and accountability for better governance.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Public Works, Governance Commission, civil society, and community-based Social Audit Club members.

The discussions focused on how we can make LAMP more responsive, accessible, credible, and useful to citizens and institutions.

During the training, participants:

Explored how citizens can use digital tools to monitor public projects, government performance, and service delivery.

Provided practical feedback on LAMP’s existing features and identified opportunities to improve its functionality, accessibility, and user experience.

Discussed mechanisms for strengthening citizen-generated information and community-level monitoring.

Examined how data from citizens and communities can support constructive engagement between citizens, civil society, and government institutions.

Shared sector-specific perspectives on how LAMP can contribute to better transparency, responsiveness, and accountability across government.

Reflected on the importance of connecting digital accountability tools with grassroots civic engagement, ensuring that technology serves real community needs.

For YOTAN, LAMP is more than a digital platform. It is an effort to bridge the gap between citizens and the state, giving citizens practical tools to ask questions, monitor commitments, report concerns, and contribute to improving governance.

The workshop is part of YOTAN’s ongoing Local Engagement for Accountability and Democracy (LEAD) 2025–2026 Project, supported by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

At Youth Transforming Africa Narrative (YOTAN), we believe Africa’s transformation will not happen by waiting for the future it will happen by equipping young people to shape it today.

Africa’s greatest asset is its people, and its greatest opportunity is its young generation.

From citizen participation to democratic governance, from education to innovation, we are committed to strengthening the voice, agency, and leadership of young Africans.

Voice → Agency → Accountability → Transformation.
The Africa we want is possible—but it requires all of us to build it.

a New Narrative for Africa.

Last week, our Executive Director Donnish Koizuwonba Pewee had the honor of serving as the keynote speaker at the first anniversary celebration of the Forum For Democracy And Inclusion-FDI, which also marked the launch of FDI’s first Civic Leadership Program.

Speaking to a room filled with young people, he shared reflections on “The Power of an Inclusive Future” a future where every young person has the opportunity to participate, lead, contribute, and help shape the decisions that affect their communities and society.

At YOTAN, we believe inclusion is more than giving people a seat at the table. It is about ensuring that their voices are heard, their ideas are valued, and their participation can influence real change.

We commend FDI for investing in young civic leaders and creating a platform where the next generation can learn, engage, and lead.
