"The beginning of a legacy of impact, innovation, and transformation."
The inaugural Young African Civic Fellowship (YAC) commenced with a powerful opening address by Donnish M Pewee, Executive Director of Youth Transforming Africa Narrative - YOTAN. The session set the tone for a transformative journey, bringing together aspiring leaders, mentors, and guests to embark on a shared mission of fostering democracy, equity, and inclusive governance across the African continent.
Mr. Pewee warmly welcomed the YAC Cohort-1 fellows, emphasizing their pivotal role as pioneers of the program. He described them not merely as participants but as "democracy entrepreneurs, torchbearers of hope, and architects of a just and inclusive Africa." He acknowledged the systemic challenges facing the continent, such as inequality, governance deficits, and barriers to progress. However, he celebrated the boundless potential within the fellows to address these issues with courage, innovation, and resilience.
The Executive Director reiterated YOTAN’s belief that "empowered youth are the heartbeat of transformational change" and highlighted the organization’s commitment to equipping fellows with essential tools, networks, and insights. He expressed hope that the fellowship would serve as a catalyst for bold leadership and meaningful impact. Mr. Pewee outlined the activities planned for the immersive workshop, including:
Deep Learning Experiences: Opportunities to refine skills and expand knowledge.
Collaborative Problem-Solving: Platforms for fellows to devise impactful solutions to societal challenges.
Mentorship Opportunities: Access to experienced mentors to guide and inspire fellows in shaping their vision for change.
Describing the workshop as "more than an event," Mr. Pewee urged participants to reflect on their unique power to effect change. He emphasized that leadership is rooted in purpose rather than position and called on the fellows to see themselves as change agents equipped to meet the needs of their communities.
In his address, Mr. Pewee reaffirmed YOTAN’s unwavering support for the fellows. He reminded them that the vision for Africa’s future—anchored in democracy, equity, and opportunity—rested on their shoulders. He encouraged them to approach the fellowship with courage, passion, and determination.
The opening session concluded with Mr. Pewee’s heartfelt message of encouragement:
"Let us seize this moment together to chart a path toward a brighter tomorrow. Change begins with you—your courage, your passion, and your determination.
