On September 24, 2025, it was a great opportunity for me to have represented UYSSED at a One Day Awareness and Capacity Building Workshop on Climate Change Adaptation and Gender Inclusion for Youth and Civil Society Organizations in Liberia, with a key focus on local climate adaptive living facility LoCAL mechanism.

Dr. Peter G. Mulbal, the Coordinator of UNCDF, gave the workshop overview of the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and the LoCAL project.

Mr. Andrew's presentation focused on three objectives: a. Awareness and response of national and local governments, village communities, and other local stakeholders in Liberia.

b. Climate Change Adaptation is integrated into local government planning; budgeting and investments are implemented using UNCDF performance-based climate resilience grants (PBCRGs).

c. The PBCRG mechanism is effectively and sustainably established in Liberia and leads to increased climate change adaptation finance available to local government and local economies.

Mr. Jeremiah Moore presented on Empowering Local Government; the synergy between LoCAL and the Local Government Act of 2018.

Mr. Z. Elijah Whapoe, the national coordinator of the climate change secretariat at the EPA, presented very well from policy to action; how Liberia's Climate Change steering committee drives climate finance for the ARREST agenda.

Furthermore, Madam Aisha Kamara Kolubah from UN Women presented on the role of gender, youth, and civil societies in the implementation of Liberia's NDC LoCAL Liberia.

Lastly, the Chief Executive Officer of Eco-Climate Initiative, Mr. Shedike V. Kamara, had breakout sessions, brainstorming, outlining and differentiating the role of gender, youth, people living with disabilities, and CSO in Liberia's NDC and LoCAL Liberia implementations.

Let me say a big thanks to our expert facilitators from the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), UN Women, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), and the Eco-Climate Initiative who presented very well.

Today marks a historical moment in Liberia, as the government of Liberia, through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), developmental partners, civil society organizations, community-based organizations, community leaders, and women and youth-led groups, officially validated and launched Liberia's Climate Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) 3.0.

The main goals and objectives of the validation of Liberia's Climate Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 aimed at reviewing and assessing the country's climate action targets and strategies to ensure they are ambitious and in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. The validation process also focuses on enhancing transparency and accountability in Liberia's climate action efforts. The government and stakeholders are working closely together to take action, enhance resilience, and drive sustainable development.

The launch of Liberia's NDC 3.0 today is significant as it demonstrates the country's commitment to addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It also signals Liberia's readiness to step up its climate action efforts and contribute to global efforts to limit the rise in global temperatures.

The NDC 3.0 is aligned with Liberia's National Development Agenda and seeks to mainstream climate change considerations into national development planning. The NDC 3.0 outlines key strategies and actions to build climate resilience, promote sustainable energy solutions, and reduce emissions from key sectors such as energy, agriculture, and forestry.

Key highlights of Liberia's NDC 3.0 include increased ambitions in renewable energy development, enhanced forest conservation and management, improved climate change adaptation and resilience measures, and strengthened capacity-building efforts. The document also emphasizes the importance of stakeholder engagement and collaboration to drive climate action at all levels.

Furthermore, the launched of Liberia's NDC 3.0 sets the stage for accelerated climate action in the country and paves the way for increased support from international partners and the global community. It represents a critical step towards achieving Liberia's climate goals and building a more sustainable and resilient future for all Liberians. Lastly, it was a perfect opportunity to have represented the United Youth Social Symposium for Education and Development (UYSSED) and the Youth Humanitarian Movement of Liberia, where I served as Co-Chair.

Today, the United Youth Social Symposium for Education and Development ( UYSSED) join the World in observant of the Universal Health Coverage Day observed on 12 December is the annual rallying point for advocates to raise the voices and share the stories of the millions of people still waiting for health, call on leaders to make smarter investments in health and remind the world about the imperative of universal health coverage (UHC). UHC means that all individuals and communities receive the health services they need without suffering financial hardship. It includes the full spectrum of essential, quality health services, from health promotion to prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care across the life course. The delivery of these services require adequate and competent health and care workers with optimal skills mix at facility, outreach and community level, and who are equitably distributed, adequately supported and enjoy decent work. As demonstrated over the past 75 years, WHO continues to stand with all people, communities, and organizations across the world in taking action towards health for all.

FORUM: "Health: it's on the government!" International Universal Health Coverage Day 2024. The high cost of health services is the primary reason people miss out on essential health care. These costs often force families to choose between paying for medicines or a visit to the doctor and other necessities, such as food, housing and education. Health costs and illness should never push people into poverty. Investing in universal health coverage and financial protection not only enhances health and well-being but also fosters greater equity and social cohesion. When populations are healthy, communities and economies prosper. That is why we call on decision makers around the world to protect people from financial hardship when accessing health services. It is the responsibility of governments to ensure that healthcare is always affordable or free, particularly for the poorest and most vulnerable among us. Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day 2024 will focus on the role of financial protection in accelerating progress towards UHC. Financial protection ensures that people don’t fall into poverty because of having to pay out-of-pocket for health costs. Over the last 20 years, financial protection has progressively deteriorated, with 2 billion people experiencing financial hardship and 1.3 billion people pushed into poverty due to health spending. This means that mothers may miss out on the life-saving intervention they need for themselves or their children, people are not diagnosed and treated for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) on time, with delays in early treatment leading to severe, untreatable or life-threatening illnesses. Healthier populations build communities that are more resilient, productive, peaceful and prosperous. Health for all is a prerequisite to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs). In spite of numerous high-level political commitments to achieve UHC by 2030, over half of the world’s population still has no access to essential health services. UHC will remain elusive until governments adequately invest in protecting people – particularly the most vulnerable among us – from impoverishing health spending. This UHC Day, WHO calls for urgent action to put financial protection measures in place. Join us in starting discussions and taking action to make financial protection and a reality. This year, UHC Day presents an opportunity to revitalize commitments towards accelerating UHC. Follow the conversations with the hashtags: , , , , , ,
