BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION
The Liberian Women Empowerment Network (LIWEN) – a network of women living with HIV is a registered non-governmental, not-for-profit organization under the laws of Liberia since February 24, 2011. It was established in 2006 by a core-team of women drawn from seven support groups of persons living with HIV and is the only network of women living with HIV in Liberia

. LIWEN current membership is made up of 37 Support Groups comprising of approximately 4,000 women living with HIV from all 15 counties of Liberia. The establishment of LIWEN is primarily to serve as an advocacy group and a platform for pushing women and girls infected and affected by HIV and AIDS specific needs into the national HIV response and providing an enabling environment where women and girls infected and affected by HIV can access quality services and commodities without any form of discrimination and enjoy their human rights. MISSION
LIWEN’s mission is:
To mobilize the Liberian society to address the specific and unique needs of women and girls living with and affected by HIV and AIDS and reduce women and girls vulnerability to HIV transmission through prevention of new infections, sexual and reproductive health and rights, economic empowerment, social mobilization, and advocacy for access to quality services and commodities including access to justice by addressing stigma and discrimination. VISION
LIWEN’s vision is to have a Liberian society where all women and girls, especially teenagers, are empowered to claim equal rights and access to quality health care, education, economic and socio-cultural opportunities irrespective of their HIV sero-status. LIWEN GOAL:
The overall goal of LIWEN is to provide a rallying point for Liberian women and girls to address particular problems affecting them,their families and communities as the result of their HIV/AIDS status. LIWEN MOTTO:
“Women Striving For a Better Tomorrow”

LIWEN at all times in undertaking its programmes and activities subscribes to the following values:

 Involvement of women and girls living with and affected by HIV at all stages of our programme design and implementation

 All our programmes and interventions are specifically targeted at women and girls, with men and boys as partners at the community levels

 We ascribe to human rights and gender-based approach in all our programmes and interventions

 Our work and interventions take into consideration the socio-cultural context of our communities.

 Sustainability is at the core of all our programme design and implementation.

 We adhere to high standards of accountability, transparency and good corporate governance


STRATEGIC PRIORITIES
This strategic plan is based on 3 thematic areas. These areas are intended to move forward with the development of operational programmes and interventions for positive health, dignity and prevention of HIV and STIs by women living with and affected by HIV and AIDS. It includes specific strategic interventions to promote health and human rights of women living with and affected by HIV and AIDS as well improved livelihoods for wellbeing and better living conditions. Other areas of strategic intervention include governance and coordination and institutional development which are more around building organizational capacity for the running of an effective organization. Cultural Festival in Grand Bassa County

On May 29, 2026, partners implementing the Irish Aid-supported project, “Protection and Supporting an Enabling Environment for Human Rights Defenders in Liberia,” organized a cultural festival in Grand Bassa County under the theme “Unity in Diversity: Celebrating Culture, Inclusion, and Human Rights.”

The event brought together community members, local leaders, youth, women, and human rights advocates to celebrate Liberia’s rich cultural heritage while promoting inclusion, diversity, peaceful coexistence, and respect for human rights. Through cultural performances, traditional displays, and community engagement activities, the festival highlighted the importance of protecting and supporting human rights defenders and fostering an enabling environment where all people can enjoy their rights and freedoms without discrimination.

The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation POWER Project, with support from Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and partners, successfully held its close-out meeting on May 28, 2026, at Cape Hotel. The meeting brought together implementing partners to reflect on the achievements, lessons learned, impact made, and sustainability of the project over the years.
The event was followed by a colorful recognition and dinner night held at Royal Grand Hotel, where partners and stakeholders celebrated the collective successes, strengthened partnerships, and honored contributions made toward advancing women’s rights and empowerment in Liberia.

Today, the Liberian Women Empowerment Network (LIWEN) hosted and celebrated the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day with several schools in Mount Barclay under the global and national theme: “Together for a .”

During our engagement with the students, we educated them on the importance of Menstrual Hygiene Day, with a strong focus on eradicating stigma, addressing misinformation about menstruation, and promoting proper menstrual hygiene practices.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our partners, Actionaid Liberia , the Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia , and the Government of Sweden for their continued support.

This initiative was implemented under our Just and Equal Community Project.

KTK’s partners participated in a social enterprise exchange learning visit to Serving Humanity for Empowerment and Development (SHED) Her Voice Agriculture Cooperative Farm and Rural Women Rights Foundation Cooperative Agriculture Farm.

The visit provided an opportunity for experience sharing, knowledge exchange, and learning on sustainable agricultural practices, women’s economic empowerment, cooperative management, and community development initiatives.
