Society Aid Liberia, a non-profit humanitarian organization focused on helping adolescent youths and women through the provision of career opportunities to grow and improve living conditions, strongly condemns the act of bullying and sexual harassment carried out by street sellers in the Red Light Market.
We are appalled by a video of a young woman was forcibly stripped naked by individuals who claimed her clothing was “too short” and “revealing.”
Society Aid Liberia categorically condemns this barbaric and unlawful act. Wearing short clothes does not, in anyway, give anyone the right to strip another person naked, humiliate them, or violate their dignity and bodily autonomy. This is gender-based violence, and it is a crime.
We call on the national government, the Ministry of Justice, and the Liberia National Police to immediately launch a full investigation into this incident. Those responsible must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
We further call on the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to provide psychosocial support to the survivor and to strengthen public education on the rights and protection of women and girls in public spaces.
No one should be subjected to violence because of what they wear. Liberia cannot achieve development while women and girls live in fear of harassment and public shaming.
Society Aid Liberia remains committed to protecting the rights of women and young people and will continue to advocate for a society free of sexual and gender-based violence.
