Our existence was initiated as a result of the aftermath of the long existed civil conflict in Liberia that plunged the young people into civil disorder and if not became perpetrators of mayhem during the war. The decade and a half introduction to arm struggle has misled majority of our youths into all forms of immoralities such as: drugs addiction, drugs trafficking, r**e, looting, prostitution etc. This kind of resentment an only be replaced by the "spirit of cooperation" using the proper means of collaborating with existing organizations that are into peace building and development activities in the country and beyond.

The Foundation for Peace Building and Democracy (FOPAD) Inc- is a voluntary integrated partnership of youths and women in Liberia with the innovative concept of social mobilization for the advancement and transformation of society towards a better future. FOPAD, a local non profit, non governmental and non political group came into being in June 2010, through the initiatives of war-affected youths and some former combatants who subscribed to the process of rebuilding lives after crisis in peace and unity. FOPAD is initiative driven and implanted with peace building devotees focused on healing the wounds of traumatized, marginalized, disabled and under-privileged youths especially women and girls in post-conflict Liberia. We are are now focus in Strengthening Post Conflict Communities Disputes and Resilience targeting the support and protection of youths, women and children.

WHO WE ARE

FOPAD involvement is keen on public information through media including outreach activities to enlighten young people about ills in society and also brighten them by means of providing essential education.

WHAT WE HAVE DONE

FOPAD conducted a Participatory Vulnerability Analysis (PVA) to understand the prevailing situation of slum dwellers in Samuel K. Doe Community. The intent of the process is to evaluate the living conditions of the inhabitants as it relates to challenges faced in order for the necessary intervention to be made by government and aide agencies.

An initiative was carried out in community meetings to sensitize people on the danger of Mob Violence and also enlighten them about governance and development in Accountability Forums. The continuity of these engagements remained vital to sustaining peace and democracy in Liberia.

We skillfully played a role in creating Ebola Awareness and the distribution of safety materials for the Ebola Virus Disease in the community.

NEED FOR ASSISTANCE

The organization is seeking partnership with donor organizations that shared the same values of peace and democracy to implement projects in keeping with standard operational procedures on transparency and accountability.

Brief Profile of the Executive Director

John Dennis Weah, Jr. is the chief founder and Executive Director of the Foundation for Peace Building and Democracy (FOPAD) Inc., a registered NGO under the laws of the Republic of Liberia. FOPAD is a grassroots not-for-profit non-governmental organization established 2010 in Liberia to engage in advocacy and campaigning using the media as a tool to proffer rights based issues. John understands the power of the media and knows how people’s actions can transform into results when the media is used as a conduit to present a platform. Working in radio production as intern and later employed with a solution oriented peace and media organization Search for Common Ground-Talking Drum Studio Liberia, got assignment as a radio producer and presented the titled program “Young Citizens” that existed during the period of the Disarmament, Demobilization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (DDRR) program. Ensuring that the work for peace building continues in governance he was inspired to INNOVATE what is known today as FOPAD. After spending nearly a decade working along other institutions in Liberia’s post war and recovery processes; he knows what truly harness a divided people in building an alliance for peace. Knowing how well to connect with the heart-beating people facing a troubling prevailing situation and trying to help and communicate peace to them.

John is currently working as a freelance reporter providing coverage in print and broadcast outlets in Liberia. His own articles for publication have been featured in local dailies-The Analyst, New Liberia and the New Republic Newspapers. In addition to his knowledge in the craft of journalism are the extensive skills he possesses in digital editing, broadcasting and audio visual.

John has being a Full Member of the Press Union of Liberia since 2007.
