We are proud to share the progress we’re making in Gbarpolu County with the Non-State Actors Women Group in Agriculture

With support from the AJ Van Rumpt Foundation through Impact Direct, SPDI is working alongside 65 smallholder farmers, mostly women, to improve agricultural production, strengthen savings, and build lasting resilience. Together, farmers have already mobilized over LRD 350,000 through their Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA). These women have a leadership and meets once a week to discuss issues affecting their lives including development, livelihood and inclusion in decision making.

Our work goes beyond the farm.

Through close engagement with communities, we heard the deeper challenges women face, ranging from gender-based violence to limited awareness of their rights and ongoing community tensions. In response, we introduced simple community based social therapy, civic education, and peacebuilding initiatives in collaboration with local authority and partners.

These efforts are already making a difference, strengthening communities, building confidence, and creating space for women to thrive.

Now, we are looking to expand this impact to reach more communities, and we welcome partnerships to make this possible so as to ensure that women, especially single mothers provide food their families, included in decision making and financially independent to take care of their families

Building Peace, Empowering Leaders, Transforming Communities

From 26–27 March 2026, Sustaining Peace through Development Initiatives (SPDI), with support from the Embassy of Ireland in Liberia , successfully conducted an Appreciative Inquiry Social Cohesion Training in Lowoma Community, Gbarpolu County.

Through our training and engagements:
• 25 community members strengthened their leadership and peacebuilding skills.
• The town now proudly has 4 female assistant quarter chiefs, helping balance local leadership.
• Communities developed action plans like growing beans and peanuts to fund a hand-dug well at the only local elementary school, and coffee & cocoa for long-term income.

Local authorities, including the County Superintendent’s office, have expressed strong appreciation for the project and our continued collaboration.

This is progress in action, empowering women, supporting local leadership, and building stronger communities together.

Harvesting Hope. Building Stronger Futures.

Under the project “Strengthening Smallholder Farmers’ Livelihoods to Increase Nutritional and Marketable Crop Production for Sustainable Economic Development in Liberia,” women-led Non-State Actor groups in Gbapolu County have begun harvesting cassava for the production of Farina (Gari).

This initiative supports their Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) activities, enabling women to generate income, provide for their families, and keep their children in school.

With the generous support of Impact Direct, this project advances:

SDG 1: No Poverty – Promoting economic empowerment and resilience
SDG 2: Zero Hunger – Strengthening food security and sustainable livelihoods

When women are empowered with resources, skills, and opportunities, they transform not only their own lives, but also their communities. Strong women build stronger economies, healthier families, and a more equitable society.
