Through the technical support of ORWOCH and African Women Leaders' Network - Liberia National Chapter funded by UN Women and European Union in Liberia under the Women and Youth Democratic Engagement Project (WYDE) the Sinoe Women Platform, WE4SELF, and other local CSOs along with Women’s Groups, and Youth in Sinoe held a town hall meeting with the newly inducted Superintendent, Hon. Alexander Nah Sleweon. The dialogue focused on key issues affecting women’s inclusion in county decision-making, in line with the Local Governance Act of 2018.

During the meeting, CSOs and women’s groups raised concerns about the lack of accountability for past projects, limited budget updates, poor information sharing, weak coordination, and the absence of women within the Superintendent’s staff which is an important step toward women’s inclusion. They also highlighted the impact of the cancellation of afternoon school sessions, which has especially affected female students, and called for the release of all past reports on the County Development Funds.

Participants recommended that the Superintendent:
• Review past projects before initiating new ones
• Create safe spaces for women’s participation in decision-making
• Revisit the decision to cancel afternoon school sessions
• Strengthen monitoring mechanisms for GBV cases, including support for safe homes

Superintendent Sleweon expressed gratitude for the platform to engage with CSOs, women’s groups, and youth. He emphasized that the Local Governance Act is still new, making these conversations crucial for aligning collective views. He encouraged more coordination and urged stakeholders to continue organizing such dialogues with county leadership.

ORWOCH in Partnership with African Women Leaders' Network - Liberia National Chapter provided technical support under the Women and Youth Democratic Engagement Project (WYDE) funded by the UN Women & European Union in Liberia to local CSOs (Southeastern Women Development, PEACE Liberia) and women’s groups including the Maryland Women’s Network, Maryland Rural Women, and Pleebo Women, along with PWDs in Maryland County, to host a town hall meeting with the Office of the Superintendent, Hon. Henry Cole, the Maryland County Council, and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

The discussion focused on county sittings and policies under the Local Government Act of 2018.
The town hall created a safe and inclusive space for CSOs, women’s groups, and PWDs to share the challenges limiting their participation in key county decision-making processes.

Representing the Superintendent, County Administrative Assistant Mr. John Baryee encouraged women’s groups and PWDs to work together, open a joint bank account for better financial tracking, and hold leaders accountable through proper reporting.

The Ministry’s representative, Marah Suku, emphasized the need for stronger information-sharing among women’s groups and CSOs, recommended setting up a committee to review past financial allocations, and committed to providing technical support to ensure follow-up.
The meeting concluded with a clear and documented action plan to support accountability and next steps for the county.
The town hall concluded with a radio talk show at Radio Cape Palmas in Harper city, Maryland county.

Condemns Alleged R**e by Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports; Calls for Transparent Investigation, Accountability, and Tougher Actions from the Ministry of Youth and Sports

The Organization for Women and Children (ORWOCH) expresses deep concern and outrage of the alleged r**e of a 14 year old girl by Deputy Minister Deputy Minister J. Bryant McGill of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The incident represents a grave violation of the rights and dignity of a child and undermines the trust placed in public officials to uphold the highest standards of conduct.

ORWOCH further says even though the Ministry of Youth and Sports has granted the Deputy Minister a leave of absence. However, ORWOCH emphasizes that administrative leave is not accountability and such an act needs stronger actions from the Ministry. ORWOCH calls for a full, independent, and transparent investigation by the Liberia National Police and subsequent speedy trial to ensure that justice is served without fear or favor.

Sexual violence against children is a national emergency. It is unacceptable that any official especially one entrusted with the development and protection of Liberia’s youth should be implicated in such a heinous act.
ORWOCH stands firmly with the survivor and her family, and urge the government to provide immediate psychosocial support and legal protection to the victim.

ORWOCH also calls on the Ministry of Youth and Sports to conduct an internal review of its workplace safety protocols and to ensure that all staff, especially minors who visit the premises, are protected from harm.

ORWOCH remains committed to advocating for the rights of women and children across Liberia and commits to closely monitoring this case and demand accountability at every level.
