The struggle for gender Equity in politics and decision-making remains paramount to the country's growth and development. In contrast, women and young Women Struggle to find opportunities that match those of their male counterparts. Liberia stands at a crossroads, either we introduce the reserve seat quotas using the special temporary measure or increase the number of Women on political parties' tickets from 30% to 50%.
A special temporary measure (TSM) to reserve seat quotas involves setting aside a specific number or percentage of elected positions for underrepresented groups, such as women, to address historical and ongoing disparities in representation. These measures, like reserved seats in a legislature, are designed to be temporary and aim to accelerate equal representation and participation until conditions of inequality are corrected. For example, a TSM might set a quota for women's representation in municipal councils to address a history of underrepresentation.
LEON remains committed to the process and joins other civil society groups to amplify this call for gender equity!
