Youth Against Conflict and Human Rights Abuse Calls for Transparency in Release of Suspect Following Failed DNA Analysis
Monrovia, Liberia – January 15, 2026
Youth Against Conflict and Human Rights Abuse expresses concern over the recent release of a suspect in a sexual assault case, reportedly based solely on the absence of DNA evidence.
It is a well-established fact in forensic science that the absence of DNA does not, by itself, prove that a sexual assault did not occur, especially in cases involving children.
The public has not been adequately informed about how the DNA analysis was conducted, who conducted it, or whether the clothing used for the DNA analysis was professionally handled, properly preserved, and conclusively verified as the exact clothing worn by the victim at the time of the alleged incident. Without this transparency, the reliability of the findings cannot be properly assessed.
The alleged assault reportedly occurred in a specific location—an office or a room. It also remains unclear whether forensic evidence was collected from the alleged scene, or whether eyewitness accounts, CCTV footage, or movement records were reviewed to confirm or disprove the child’s presence at the location mentioned.
Before releasing or effectively exonerating a suspect based solely on failed DNA results, the authorities owe the public a clear and transparent explanation of the investigative process.
Youth Against Conflict and Human Rights Abuse calls on the relevant authorities to provide comprehensive information to maintain public confidence in the justice system and ensure the protection of children.
