II Project Conducts Successful Joint Monitoring Visit in Grand Gedeh and River Gee Counties
In an effort to assess progress against planned activities, strengthen collaboration among stakeholders, and review community engagement strategies, Save the Children International – Liberia, through its Liberia Empowerment Through Attendance, Reading and Nutrition (LEARN II) project, successfully conducted a Joint Monitoring Visit (JMV) led by the Ministry of Education, with support from the Ministries of Agriculture and Health, from February 1–6, 2026, in Grand Gedeh and River Gee Counties.
The team evaluated the extent to which PTAs are supporting the project by providing condiments for school meals, establishing and maintaining school gardens, and rehabilitating critical school infrastructure, including latrines, storerooms, kitchens, energy-saving stoves, and school campus fencing.
During the visit, the delegation assessed key program components such as:
• The preparation and consumption of hot meals, and use of locally produced Power Gari.
• Students’ reading fluency, comprehension skills, and classroom learning practices.
• Establishment and functionality of School Health Clubs, hygiene promotion, and overall school health practices.
• Storeroom & Commodity Management.
• School Agriculture: Availability and maintenance of school gardens supporting nutrition and learning.
• Safety measures and protection mechanisms for students on campus.

The monitoring mission was successfully coordinated, with the Ministry of Education leading the process. Following the assessments, the ministry confirmed that most program activities are being implemented as planned, supported by strong evidence gathered during the visit, while also noting recommended areas for improvement. The exercise highlighted positive community participation and strengthened government support for the LEARN II project interventions. Save the Children and its partners expressed appreciation to local authorities, school administrators, PTAs, and community members for their continued collaboration in improving children’s learning, nutrition, and wellbeing.

Save The Children’s Scholarship Beneficiaries Graduate

Twenty-two (22) scholarship beneficiaries from the Kakata Rural Teacher Training Institute (KRTTI) in Margibi County and Webbo Rural Teacher Training Institute (WRTTI) in River Gee County, have graduated. The beneficiaries include seven students (2 males, five females) from KRTTI and fifteen students (all females) from WRTTI.

The graduation ceremonies, which were held separately on June 20 and 24, 2025 respectively, were attended by local government officials and partners including UNICEF, We Care, and Peace Corp, among others.

The beneficiaries were awarded ‘C’ Certificates following the completion of the 2024/2025 training circle.

Since October 2024, Save the Children Liberia has supported twenty-two scholarship beneficiaries under its LEARN II Project through monthly stipends across the two Teacher Training Institutions. The support covered seven beneficiaries at Kakata Rural Teacher Training Institute and seventeen at Webbo Rural Teacher Training Institute.

In Kakata, the keynote speaker, Mr. Sylvester N’dordor Morlue reminded teachers of their responsibilities as custodians of the keys that unlock opportunities available to students.
He emphasized the value of education, which has direct potential to improve the quality of lives and provide equal access as well as reduce gender-based violence.
Morlu called on teachers to serve as role models that would positively shape the students’ characters.
Speaking on behalf of Save The Children Liberia, Social Behaviour Change for Education Advisor, Gladys Lavien expressed gratitude for the partnership.
She added “Our delight at the milestone, our beneficiaries have achieved by graduating, and our appeal to MOE/GOL to incorporate and retain the trainees, who are now capable and prepared to deliver high-quality education in our classrooms.”

Scholarship support is a key education activity under Save the Children LEARN II Project, which aligns with the Ministry of Education’s Girls Education Strategy. LEARN II is Liberia Empowerment through Attendance, Reading and Nutrition Phase two project.

Every child, everywhere, has the right to a quality education. A leader in child education around the world, Save the Children works with children, families, schools and communities, as well as supporters, partners and leaders, to help children get ready for and succeed in school – so they can succeed in life. National Enrolment Drive Gets Boost... Save The Children Promises Increase in Food Ration

The “Back to my classroom campaign” under the National Enrolment Drive, has officially been launched at the county level with Save the Children International (SCI) Liberia Office committing to increase food rations in schools where they provide school feeding.

Making the commitment at the launching ceremony in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County on Monday, June 30, 2025, Country Director, Mercy Wanjiku Gichuhi said SCI will increase the school ration at schools where the organization currently provides feeding for students.

“To the children, Save the Children will increase food rations at all the schools where we provide school feeding. As we embarked on the back to my classroom campaign, we aim to get more children in school and let us also work to ensure that the schools are safe for children,” Madam Gichuhi stressed.

As she continued to address the audience, this is what she had to say, “Let us also work to ensure that the schools can provide quality learning for children and ensure that the health needs of children are met.”

She reiterated Save the Children’s mission to inspire breakthroughs that ensure children are treated well and “Look at children’s ability to learn, survive and be protected.”

The National Enrolment Drive is a project initiated by the Government of Liberia to take about 250,000 children off the street, an undertaking, which SCI is a partner.

Day of the African Child Celebrated.. Save the Children Joins UNICEF, Others

In observance of this year’s Day of the African Child, Save the Children was among partners including UNICEF and the Government of Liberia at an official indoor program to celebrate the day. June 16 of each year is celebrated as the Day of the African Child.

This year’s celebration, which was held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, in Monrovia, integrated World Day against Child Labor under the national theme: “Investing in Our Future: Prioritizing Child Rights and Ending Child Labour Through Budget and Action.”

The program was interspersed with panel discussions on commitments made to children during the 2024 Day of the African Child, presentation on Liberia’s child budget lens and performances reflecting the difficulties of children and the need to restore their dignity.

In her introduction of the occasion, Ms. Famatta S. Kamara told the audience that the celebration was a day of reflection and renewed commitment for national leaders, parents and community members not to only speak on child protection but also act on it. She challenged leaders to transform their commitments into tangible actions.

Chanting slogan amid applause from the audience, the children said, “There is nothing about children without the involvement of children.”

The Day of the African Child celebration arises from a summit of Heads of States of the then Organization of African Unity held in Abuja, Nigeria in June 1990. During the summit, it was officially declared that the 16th Day of June every year be celebrated as The Day of the Africa Child in commemoration of the death of hundreds of school children in Soweto, South Africa, massacred by the apartheid regime in 1976. The children had taken to the street of Soweto to protest their education’s inferior quality and demand their right to be taught in their own language.

Every child, everywhere, has the right to a quality education. A leader in child education around the world, Save the Children works with children, families, schools and communities, as well as supporters, partners and leaders, to help children get ready for and succeed in school so they can succeed in life. Save The Children Organizes Training for Parents, Teachers

The Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) of River Gee and Grand Gedeh counties have completed capacity building training in leadership, communication and reporting across PTA structures in the southeastern region of Liberia. The training was conducted in Grand Gedeh County.

The training, which is an activity of Save the Children Liberia’s LEARN II Project, brought together eighteen PTAs with twelve from River Gee and six from Grand Gedeh counties. LEARN is the Liberia Education, Attendance, Reading and Nutrition phase II.

It is a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded project under the McGovern-Dole International (MGD) Food for Education (FFE) and Child Nutrition Program. It is implemented by Save the Children, Mercy Corps, and Kawadah Farms in four counties of Liberia.
The project focuses on improving the literacy of school-age children, increasing the use of good health, nutrition, and dietary practices, and improving the effectiveness of food assistance through Local and Regional Procurement (LRP). It also concentrates on improving the literacy of school-age children, increasing the use of good health and dietary practices as well as improving the effectiveness of food assistance through Local and Regional Procurement (LRP)
The training, which ran from June 9-11, 2025, was also intended for PTA members
to understand the functions, principles, and structure of the National PTA Network of Liberia.

Other highlights of the training were to strengthen the roles of PTAs in oversight and accountability as well as promoting transparency with local PTAs.

The participants were trained on how they could supply reliable and updated data on PTA activities at the district and county levels at all schools for informed decision- making by stakeholders.
