II Project Conducts Successful Joint Monitoring Visit in Grand Gedeh and River Gee Counties
In an effort to assess progress against planned activities, strengthen collaboration among stakeholders, and review community engagement strategies, Save the Children International – Liberia, through its Liberia Empowerment Through Attendance, Reading and Nutrition (LEARN II) project, successfully conducted a Joint Monitoring Visit (JMV) led by the Ministry of Education, with support from the Ministries of Agriculture and Health, from February 1–6, 2026, in Grand Gedeh and River Gee Counties.
The team evaluated the extent to which PTAs are supporting the project by providing condiments for school meals, establishing and maintaining school gardens, and rehabilitating critical school infrastructure, including latrines, storerooms, kitchens, energy-saving stoves, and school campus fencing.
During the visit, the delegation assessed key program components such as:
• The preparation and consumption of hot meals, and use of locally produced Power Gari.
• Students’ reading fluency, comprehension skills, and classroom learning practices.
• Establishment and functionality of School Health Clubs, hygiene promotion, and overall school health practices.
• Storeroom & Commodity Management.
• School Agriculture: Availability and maintenance of school gardens supporting nutrition and learning.
• Safety measures and protection mechanisms for students on campus.
The monitoring mission was successfully coordinated, with the Ministry of Education leading the process. Following the assessments, the ministry confirmed that most program activities are being implemented as planned, supported by strong evidence gathered during the visit, while also noting recommended areas for improvement. The exercise highlighted positive community participation and strengthened government support for the LEARN II project interventions. Save the Children and its partners expressed appreciation to local authorities, school administrators, PTAs, and community members for their continued collaboration in improving children’s learning, nutrition, and wellbeing.
