Social Media Challenge #2
Every nation has a story. Ours begins at Providence Island.
Originally known as Dozoa, a Gola word meaning “land in the center of water,” Providence Island became the first successful landing site of formerly enslaved and free Black settlers from the United States in 1822, marking the beginning of the journey that led to the founding of the Republic of Liberia.
Today, the island preserves powerful symbols of our history, including the historic Providence Well, which has provided fresh water for over two centuries; a replica of the Elizabeth, the ship that carried the first settlers; monuments depicting the meeting between settlers and Indigenous leaders; reconstructed settler homes; and the Tree of Peace, created from decommissioned weapons from the 14years of Civil War, as a lasting symbol of reconciliation, unity, and hope.
Standing where Liberia’s modern story began reminds us that every great journey starts with courage, resilience, and a vision for a better future.
That same spirit drives Team Liberia. We are nine young innovators from different counties and backgrounds, united by one mission: expanding access to STEM education and empowering young Liberians to become problem-solvers, innovators, and leaders.
Through the FIRST Global Challenge 2026, we are doing more than building robots—we are collaborating across cultures, strengthening our leadership, and proving that innovation can solve real-world challenges. As ambassadors of Liberia, we proudly carry our nation’s rich history while helping shape its future.
Just as Providence Island marked the beginning of Liberia’s journey, Team Liberia represents a new generation Igniting Innovation through STEM.
