United for Sapo: Youth Voices Rising!
The Green Life Impact Foundation stands firmly alongside the Liberia Youth Biodiversity Network and Youth Climate Change Initiative Liberia to defend Sapo National Park Liberia’s oldest, largest, and most biodiverse protected area.
Recently, Hon. Thomas Romeo Quiah of Sinoe County proposed de-gazetting (removing protected status from) Sapo National Park, potentially opening the door to logging, mining, and habitat destruction that could devastate this irreplaceable forest. This proposal has sparked urgent concern across communities and institutions. The House of Representatives is investigating, with committees now probing the matter and seeking explanations from EPA, Forestry Development Authority, Conservation International, and Fauna & Flora International .
In response, the EPA’s Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo, has strongly rejected this proposal warning that it would inflict “irreversible damage” to Liberia’s environment, economy, and culture. Sapo is not only a global carbon sink and biodiversity treasure, but each dollar invested in protected areas yields at least six in ecosystem services like flood control, clean water, and climate resilience .
This threat isn't just about one park it represents a broader challenge to Liberia’s environmental integrity, legal commitments, and youth driven climate aspirations.
We won't stay silent.
What we stand for:
Preserving Sapo’s biodiversity and cultural heritage
Upholding Liberia’s environmental laws and global climate pledges
Empowering communities and youth to sustainably manage and benefit from these forests
