Today November 19, Worldwide, issues that confronting men at all levels including their mental wellbeing are being discussed as well as their numerous and resilience contributions as allies in homes, society and places of work.
The International Men's Day celebration sadly in Liberia neither the government, National, International including families have not understood the importance of the day. The day calls for sober reflection on the numerous positive contributions of men and boys in homes, schools and place of work that are meaningfully contributing towards preventing Gender Based Violence and how men as allies are promoting Gender Equality and Equity. Most importantly, International Men's Day celebration is also meant to advocate and solicit government and other stakeholders suports toward Male mental health (emotional and physical paints and hurts) they are carrying on a daily basis without any recognition, help and support from organisations and government. We all are all aware that in February of 2024, African leaders developed an instrument on Male allies.
That instrument calls for men inclusion in addressing violence. The question is, how intentional and supportive is the government and developing partners in adhering to this call and how are they supporting and promoting male mental health?
Yes, Gender-based Violence is an issue, but how intentional are we [ governmentand citizens] towards this?. If we keep neglecting the mental well being of men and boys who are the perceived perpetrators of violence, are we serious in fighting GBV? The fight must be collective not selective.
Do we at times reflect on how violence are still on the increase in our communities, homes and place of work? The answer is, " We are not intentional in addressing Male issues ". We are treating it as less important. The sooner we realise Male mental health, the su***de will stop, violence will decrease.
As we celebrate this year's [2025] International Men's Day under the Theme: "Male Su***de", He For She Crusaders Liberia salutes all men and boys, recognising those valuable contributions that are resonating so well in ending violence and promoting peace at all levels. Happy International Men's Day.
