Ministry Of Gender, Children And Social Protection-Liberia Begins Distribution of US$52,810 Worth of Assorted Items to Strengthen County Gender Offices across Liberia

Monrovia-Liberia, October 26, 2026 โ€” The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP) has commenced the distribution of office equipment and furniture valued at US$52,810 to County Gender Offices across Liberia to strengthen institutional capacity, improve service delivery, and enhance responses to gender-based violence (GBV).

The distribution, supported through the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP) implemented by the MGCSP, began in Nimba County on Monday, October 26, 2026, and will continue across all counties.

Under the initiative, each County Gender Office will receive assorted items including laptop, printer, printer cartridges, a semi-executive desk and chair, regular desk and chair, visitor chairs, standing fans, and filing cabinets.

The equipment is intended to strengthen the day-to-day operations of County Gender Offices by improving documentation, data management, recordkeeping, reporting, and coordination. It will also provide county-level gender officers with essential tools to better carry out their mandates, particularly in supporting women, girls, and vulnerable populations and coordinating responses to GBV.

The intervention falls under Component Four of LWEP, which focuses on strengthening institutions to advance gender equality and improve the delivery of gender-responsive services. Through this investment, the Ministry seeks to reinforce the operational capacity of its county offices and improve access to essential gender and social protection services at the community level.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Gbeme Horace Kollie, is undertaking a weeklong county tour to engage women, children, womenโ€™s organizations, and county authorities on issues affecting their welfare and to strengthen collaboration in advancing the Ministryโ€™s gender equality and social protection agenda.

During the tour, Minister Horace Kollie will formally present the equipment and furniture to County Gender Offices and engage womenโ€™s organizations and other stakeholders on the Ministryโ€™s mandate, ongoing interventions, and opportunities for stronger coordination at the county level.

The distribution underscores the Ministryโ€™s commitment to strengthening its institutional presence across Liberia and ensuring that County Gender Offices are better equipped to deliver responsive, accessible, and effective services to the people they serve.

MEET TOTOQUELLEHโ€™S โ€œLAWYER FOR WOMEN AND CHILDRENโ€

His name is Siaker M. Gbessay, a SASA! Together activist; but in Totoquelleh Town, residents have given him another name: โ€œLawyer for Women and Children.โ€

His passion is simple but powerful: helping build a community where women and children are safer and where men choose peaceful, non-violent relationships.

Siaker says men who were once difficult to convince are now beginning to challenge themselves, and one another, to become ambassadors of peace.

Through the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP), the Government of Liberia is taking conversations about preventing violence directly into communities through LWEP and SASA! Together.

Siaker has one dream: to see Totoquelleh become one of the most peaceful communities in Liberia.

(MONROVIA, LIBERIA), The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Gbeme Horace-Kollie, is urging women across the country, particularly cross-border traders, rural women, and market women, to exercise heightened vigilance and strictly observe all recommended health and safety measures amid growing regional concern over the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak.

The Ministerโ€™s call follows a statement issued by the Ministry of Health on October 21, 2026, directing all health facilities, border entry points, public buildings, and other institutions across Liberia to immediately strengthen screening measures and strictly enforce Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols.

The MoH's directive is based on the confirmation of an Ebola case in Nigeria and the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak, which have prompted renewed calls for heightened surveillance, strengthened infection prevention measures, and strict compliance with public health guidance.

Among the key measures outlined by the Ministry of Health are ensuring functional handwashing stations with soap and water or appropriate hand sanitizers at entrances, screening individuals for symptoms and relevant travel or exposure history, and adhering to national public health guidance. The Ministry further emphasized that temperature checks alone are insufficient for effective screening and infection prevention.

In light of these measures, Minister Horace-Kollie is particularly encouraging women engaged in cross-border trade, mining activities, agricultural activities, and other economic transactions that involve frequent movement between communities and neighboring countries to remain alert, comply with screening procedures, and cooperate fully with health authorities.

Recognizing the indispensable role women play in local commerce, food security, agriculture, and household livelihoods, the Minister stresses that protecting women from preventable health risks is critical to safeguarding families, communities, and Liberiaโ€™s broader economic well-being.

โ€œThis is a time for vigilance, responsibility, and collective action, not denial. Every woman must take preventive health measures seriously, follow official guidance, and help protect her family and community from potential health risks,โ€ Minister Horace-Kollie emphasized.

The Minister is also encouraging market associations, womenโ€™s organizations, community leaders, and local authorities to intensify awareness campaigns, particularly in rural and border communities, to ensure that women receive accurate, accessible, and timely information on Ebola prevention.

She further cautions against misinformation, complacency, and disregard for established health protocols.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection encourages all women and community members to rely on official communications from the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) for verified information.

The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to working with health authorities, development partners, womenโ€™s groups, and community stakeholders to promote public awareness and ensure that women, especially those in vulnerable and underserved communities are informed and empowered to take appropriate preventive action.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has assured the public that it will provide timely and accurate updates as the situation evolves. Protecting women means protecting families, communities, and Liberia.

MGCSP - ONE DISTRICT, TWO COMMUNITIES: A SHARED LEARNING EXPERIENCE ๐ŸŒพ

On Wednesday, 14 October 2026, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP), through the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP), conducted a joint LWEP and REALISE monitoring visit to Queenie-1 and Gbojah towns in Suehn Mecca District, Bomi County, alongside the World Bank and project partners.

In Gbojah, Town Chief Kamara welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for government and World Bank support. Community members shared positive experiences associated with SASA! under LWEP Component 1a, emphasizing continued dialogue and collective action to prevent violence against women and girls.

Saata Massalay, a member of Whilekamah Village Savings and Loan Association, shared how a VSLA loan helped her buy cassava and red oil for resale. She said her small profits were helping pay her childrenโ€™s school fees and provide food for her household.

The SASA! drama offered valuable lessons on how harmful attitudes and behaviours can lead to violence, while highlighting how healthy, respectful relationships help build peaceful communities. The performance encouraged reflection and shared learning among both the visiting delegates and Gbojay residents.

In Queenie-1, REALISE participants reported cultivating 39 acres of rice, exceeding their 35-acre target. Residents also established an operational community rice mill to ease processing, particularly for women who previously pounded rice manually.

Across both communities, the experiences highlighted the value of practical skills, community ownership and access to livelihood resources. Listening to these voices helps both projects understand what is working and where further support is needed.
