For over a decade, Sweden has been a steadfast partner in Liberia’s development journey—advancing peace, strengthening democratic institutions, and improving lives across communities. 
Through this partnership with UNDP Liberia:

Young Leaders Are Shaping the Future of the Mano River Union
What happens when young people are given a real seat at the table?
At the MRU YouthConnekt Summit 2026 in Freetown, youth from Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire are participating to influence policies and propose real solutions to regional challenges.
From access to finance to cross-border mobility, the voices of participants are intended to drive change.

HAPPENING NOW: The First-Ever MRU YouthConnekt Summit 2026

Young people from , Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Côte d’Ivoire have gathered in Freetown to shape the future of the Mano River Union through dialogue, innovation, and action.

This summit is creating a platform for youth to engage directly with policymakers, development partners, the private sector, and the United Nations Development Programme - UNDP to discuss practical solutions to the challenges and opportunities facing the region.

Discussions are focused on:
✅ Trade and Entrepreneurship
✅ Agriculture and Food Systems
✅ Technology and Artificial Intelligence
✅ Peace and Security
✅ Youth Leadership and Civic Engagement

As one of Africa's most youthful regions, the MRU has enormous potential.

Together, these conversations are amplifying youth voices, fostering regional collaboration, and unlocking opportunities that transcend borders.

NEC Liberia continues to strengthen institutional communication across Liberia

The National Elections Commission NEC Liberia has launched the second phase of regional consultations on its draft Communications Strategy, Policy and Protocol this time in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.

The three-day consultation brings together 27 participants, including NEC Liberia Magistrates from eight counties, community radio managers, and representatives from the Press Union Of Liberia Official, Female Journalists Association of Liberia, Center for Media Studies and Peacebuilding (CESMESP), and other key stakeholders.

Together, they are reviewing and validating key communication frameworks.

NEC Liberia Chairperson Jonathan K. Weedor highlighted that the Commission’s role goes beyond election day.

“Public information should be a cardinal priority… We rely on the media and civil society to reach every corner of Liberia.”

This initiative is supported through the Liberia Electoral Support Project (LESP), managed by UNDP Liberia in partnership with NEC Liberia UN Women Liberia, and NIMD Liberia with funding from the European Union in Liberia, Irish Aid and the Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia.

These efforts aim to strengthen transparency, public trust, civic awareness, and counter misinformation year-round.

This follows an earlier consultation in Ganta, Nimba County. Input will shape a stronger, more inclusive communication framework for Liberia’s electoral cycle.

What should Liberia’s future look like—and how should its Constitution reflect it?

The Governance Commission has taken an important step in tackling this question by convening a high-level public policy dialogue on the review of the 1986 Constitution toward shaping the country’s future.

At the Monrovia City Hall on Wednesday June 10, 2026, government officials, civil society, and international partners converged with a focus on aligning Liberia’s constitutional framework with present-day realities—including technological advancement and the needs of a predominantly youthful population.

In his keynote remarks, the Resident Representative of UNDP Liberia Aliou Mamadouu Dia underscored the urgency of modernizing the Constitution to reflect a rapidly evolving society.

He emphasized the importance of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital innovation, and technology-driven governance into Liberia’s legal framework.

“With nearly 70% of Liberia’s population being young, we cannot afford to design a constitution rooted only in the past. We must embed digital rights, innovation, and inclusive public services into our governance systems,” Dia noted.

UNDP Liberia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a transparent, inclusive, and forward-looking constitutional review process—one that empowers Liberians and prepares the nation for a digital future.

This dialogue marks a critical step in building a governance system that reflects the aspirations of all Liberians—today and for generations to come.

The National Elections Commission (NEC Liberia) has launched a three-day regional consultation on its draft Communications Strategy, Policy, and Protocol.

The consultation brings together media leaders, civil society organizations, and election officials from across Liberia to review and provide input into frameworks designed to strengthen transparency, stakeholder engagement, and public access to electoral information.

Speaking at the opening, NEC Liberia Executive Director Anthony K. Sengbe reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to enhancing the integrity, transparency, and inclusiveness of Liberia’s electoral processes through improved engagement with the media and other stakeholders.

Participants highlighted the vital role of the media in promoting informed citizen participation, countering misinformation and disinformation, and strengthening public confidence in elections.

Press Union Of Liberia Official President Julius Kanubah welcomed the decentralized approach, noting that it as a key step toward broader participation and shared ownership.

This consultation is part of the Liberia Electoral Support Project (LESP), managed by UNDP Liberia.

It provides an important platform for dialogue and collaboration between NEC Liberia, the media, and civil society as Liberia continues to strengthen democratic governance.

The LESP is implemented in partnership with UN Women Liberia, the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy, (NIMD Liberia and NEC Liberia, with support from the European Union in Liberia, Irish Aid, and the Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia.

🎤 “You are not the leaders of tomorrow—you are the leaders of today.”

At the opening of the Young Political Leadership School Africa (YPLS) Cohort 13 in Monrovia, UNDP Liberia Resident Representative Aliou Mamadou Dia delivered a powerful call for ethical, inclusive leadership across Africa.

He challenged the 150 young people selected for the Young Political Leadership School Africa, to lead with integrity, accountability, and purpose, reminding them that Africa’s future will be shaped by the choices they make now.

"Do not wait for permission to lead. Lead where you are. Lead in your communities, your schools, your institutions. Lead through ideas, through service, and through example. Africa does not need more politicians. Africa needs more ethical leaders. It does not need more promises. It needs action. It does not need leaders who seek power. It needs leaders who use power responsibly to improve lives," Dia emphasized.

🌍 This moment is backed by action. Through YPLS Africa, participants are gaining real-world skills in governance, civic engagement, and political leadership—helping to close the gap between youth potential and political power.

With over 60% of Africans under 25, the message is clear:
