NEC Validates New Communications Strategy to Strengthen Electoral Transparency and Public Trust

The NEC Liberia has validated its new Communications Strategy, marking a major milestone in strengthening the Commission's institutional communication and transparency, and enhancing public confidence in Liberia's electoral processes.

Validated on 14 August 2026 by the NEC Board of Commissioners and the leadership of the Secretariat, the Strategy provides a comprehensive framework to strengthen stakeholder engagement, media relations, public information, crisis communication, and internal communications throughout the electoral cycle.

The Strategy was developed by the NEC with technical support from the EU-funded European Partnership for Democracy and Liberia Electoral Support Project, which is managed by UNDP and implemented in partnership with UN Women, the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy, with support from the European Union in Liberia, Ireland, and Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia.

Speaking during the validation, NEC Chairperson Jonathan K. Wedor emphasized the importance of proactive communication in strengthening democracy. "Communication from NEC must be very robust. We need people to be informed about what we are doing and to ensure that misinformation does not fill information gaps. Prevention is better than cure, and that requires a proactive communication strategy."

The Strategy is the outcome of an inclusive nationwide consultation process, with regional consultations held in Ganta, Buchanan, and Monrovia bringing together journalists, media development organizations, Election Magistrates, and NEC officials to strengthen the Commission's communication framework.

Empowering Youth. Protecting Democracy. Strengthening Information Integrity

As Liberia's digital landscape continues to expand, young people are emerging as frontline defenders of democracy by becoming informed, responsible, and ethical users of information.

On August 12, International Youth Day, young leaders representing student journalists, youth organizations, political parties, and civil society gathered at Liberia's NEC Liberia for the second Media and Information Literacy for Democracy: Strengthening Youth Participation through Information Literacy workshop.

The initiative, implemented by UNDP Liberia through the Liberia Electoral Support Project (LESP) with funding from the European Union, Sweden and Ireland, is designed to equip young people with practical skills to identify misinformation and disinformation.

In partnership with the NEC Liberia, Press Union Of Liberia Official, and Local Voices Liberia, the training critically assesses online content, combat cyberbullying and hate speech, and engage responsibly in democratic and electoral processes.

Through interactive learning sessions grounded in the UNDP Youth Civic and Political Participation Curriculum and UNESCO's Journey through the MILtiverse, participants explored the impact of traditional and digital media on democracy, strengthened their digital citizenship skills, and learned how to promote information integrity within their communities.

This workshop is the second of three sessions aimed at building a nationwide network of young champions for information integrity who will help foster peaceful elections, strengthen democratic participation, and contribute to a more resilient information ecosystem across Liberia.

Investing in youth is investing in Liberia's democratic future. To expand the reach and impact of this important initiative, continued support from development partners, government institutions, media organizations, civil society, and the private sector is essential.

The Liberia Electoral Support Project (LESP) is managed by UNDP Liberia and implemented in partnership with UN Women Liberia and the NIMD Liberia , in collaboration with the NEC Liberia, with support from the European Union in Liberia, Irish Aid, and Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia.
