Did you know that Ovarian cancer is one of the most serious gynecologic cancers because it is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, when treatment becomes more difficult.

Once described as a “silent killer,” we now know that ovarian cancer can have symptoms — even in its early stages.

⚠️ Know the possible signs:
• Persistent abdominal or pelvic pain
• Abdominal swelling or bloating
• Feeling full quickly
• Nausea or vomiting
• Changes in bowel habits

These symptoms can be caused by many conditions and do not necessarily mean cancer. But if they persist for more than 1–2 weeks or do not improve with usual treatment, seek medical advice.

SEPTEMBER CANCER FOCUS: OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS

This September, LCS is shining a light on gynecologic cancers, with a special focus on ovarian cancer.

Gynecologic cancers affect the female reproductive system and include cancers of the ovaries, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, va**na and v***a.

Why are we talking about ovarian cancer?

Ovarian cancer is one of the most serious gynecologic cancers because it is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, when treatment becomes more difficult.

In Liberia, ovarian cancer is the second most common gynecologic cancer based on submitted pathology.

August is Appendiceal Cancer Awareness Month
The appendix plays a role in supporting the immune system and gut health.
While appendix cancer is rare, cases in young adults have increased — their risk is now 3x higher than in older adults.

Risk factors may include ⬇️
- Diet high in processed foods
- Obesity and insulin resistance
- Alcohol and to***co use

Know the signs ⬇️
Early symptoms are rare, but watch for:
- Persistent right lower abdominal pain
- Changes in bowel habits
- Bloating and indigestion

There is no screening test for appendiceal cancer. Most cases are found when the appendix is removed for suspected appendicitis.

This August, let’s focus on ⬇️
1. *Our young adults* — raise awareness about the risks of ho**ah smoking
2. *Early action* — encourage medical consultation for persistent right-sided abdominal pain, bloating, or bowel changes

Early detection and healthy choices save lives. Talk to a healthcare professional if you have concerns.

Bone cancer is rare — less than 1% of adults globally. But in children, it’s up to 4%.
In Liberia, it’s even rarer, which means it’s often found late.

Who’s most at risk?
1. Adolescent boys 13-16 during growth spurts
2. People with war-related retained foreign bodies
3. Older adults

Don’t ignore these signs:
- Persistent bone or joint pain
- A lump or bump on a bone/joint
- Trouble moving a limb
- Fractures without injury

⚠️ In teens, these symptoms are often mistaken for “growing pains.”

This July, let’s act early:
Encourage kids with persistent bone pain to see a health worker.
Educate parents + health workers on the signs.
Early detection saves limbs. Early detection saves lives.

Tag a parent, teacher, or health worker who needs to see this.
