SAMFU Advances Community-Led Sea Turtle Protection in Lake Piso Landscape; Grand Cape Mount County.....

Save My Future Foundation (SAMFU) in partnership with the Environmental Justice Foundation make progress in strengthening community-based sea turtle conservation efforts across six coastal communities within the Lake Piso Multiple Use Reserve.
The initiative focused on building local capacity, raising awareness, and improving monitoring systems to protect sea turtles and other endangered marine species.
As part of its implementation, SAMFU conducted awareness sessions in Bombojah, Falie, Latia, Sembehun, Robertsport and Bomie through six town hall meetings.
These engagements reached 61 participants, including fishermen, fishmongers, sea chiefs, youth leaders and community members. The sessions highlighted the importance of protecting sea turtles, dolphins and manatees, while addressing community concerns about interactions between marine species and fishing activities. A total of 65 awareness materials were reproduced and distributed, increasing outreach from a 10% baseline to 75%.

In strengthening community ownership, SAMFU mobilized and recruited 12 volunteers across the six communities to serve as sea turtle patrollers. Each community selected two individuals who were subsequently trained during a three-day capacity-building session.
The training focused on identifying, documenting and reporting sea turtle activities. Although the TIMBY mobile application was not deployed, participants were equipped with practical skills in using mobile phones and provided with standardized reporting templates.

Following the training, all 12 patrollers were deployed and have since been conducting daily beach monitoring activities. Since January 19, 2026, a total of 180 patrol visits have been recorded across the six communities. Monitoring efforts led to the identification of a sea turtle nesting site in Bombojah, where approximately 58 eggs were safely relocated and are currently being monitored within the community.

Additionally, patrollers in Sembehun reported a case involving a community member engaged in hunting sea turtles and collecting eggs for sale or consumption, highlighting ongoing threats within the project area. The monitoring process also captured sightings of other marine species, including humpback dolphins and manatees, as reported by local fishermen.

SAMFU remains committed to working with communities and relevant stakeholders to sustain monitoring efforts and further strengthen conservation measures within the Lake Piso landscape.

SAMFU Strengthens Clan Collaboration for Customary Land Rights in Liberia

Monrovia, Liberia โ€“ September 17, 2025 โ€” The Save My Future (SAMFU) Foundation, with support from Misereor, has successfully concluded a ten-day field mission aimed at fostering peaceful harmonization of customary land boundaries between communities in Grand Cape Mount County.

The mission, which ran from September 9 to 17, focused on the Fahnbulleh Clan and Gbelleh-Gambi Customary land, laying the groundwork for upcoming boundaries walk, demarcation, and subsequently confirmatory surveys as outlined Customary Land Formalization (CLF) process, led by the Liberia Land Authority.

Meetings were held across eight zones in the Fahnbulleh Clanโ€”Mโ€™Baloma, Tahnmafa, Fahnjah, Nagbeana, Tienii, Boloma Fahnbulleh, Pujhun, and Diah and in six zonal towns within the Gbelleh-Gambi Clan. These gatherings brought together over 200 participants, including chiefs, elders, women, youth, CLDMC members and other residents, to discuss land boundaries and promote peaceful coexistence.

During the meetings, SAMFU Executive Director Wyston Benda-Henries emphasized the importance of resolving boundary disputes before the official harmonization process begins.

He cautioned that unresolved land conflicts could result in contested areas being claimed by the Government of Liberia under the Land Rights Act, potentially leading to legal consequences for unauthorized land use.

โ€œThis process is not just about drawing lines,โ€ Itโ€™s about securing the future of communities, ensuring legal recognition of their land, and laying the foundation for sustainable developmentโ€; Benda-Henries said.

SAMFU expressed optimism that the peaceful resolution of boundary disputes and the formal recognition of customary land rights will empower communities and promote long-term development in Grand Cape Mount County.

At the conclusion of the mission, leaders from both clans expressed gratitude to SAMFU and Misereor for their support. They pledged continued collaboration and voiced excitement about the prospect of receiving official land deeds as clans marking a significant step toward land ownership and autonomy.

๐•ธ๐–”๐–“๐–—๐–”๐–›๐–Ž๐–†, ๐•ท๐–Ž๐–‡๐–Š๐–—๐–Ž๐–†-The Liberia Land Authority (LLA) and Save My Future Foundation (SAMFU) recently conducted a series of awareness meetings in Dayblay, Gbarzon District, Grand Gedeh County to educate the community on the importance of forest and natural resource management. The meetings held on February 10 and February 22, 2025, addressed several critical issues, including the unauthorized entry of Burkinabees into the proposed Krahn Bassa National Park and the denial of women's rights to their parents' customary land.

During the first meeting on February 10, LLA and SAMFU representatives explained the significance of protecting natural resources and managing forest land sustainably. They highlighted the unauthorized activities of Burkinabees, who have entered the proposed park for farming, and emphasized the need to stop the cultivation of forest land.

The second meeting on February 22 brought together the Burkinabees and their hosts to discuss these issues further. The session was attended by 22 women and 30 men from Dayblay. The discussions underscored the importance of recognizing women's rights to inherit and own their parents' customary land, a right that has been denied in many towns within Gbarzon District.

LLA and SAMFU urged women who have been denied their rights due to family or marital disputes to report their cases to the LLA.
This initiative aims to ensure equality and justice for women in the region.

The community's response to these meetings has been positive, with plans for follow-up actions to address the issues raised and ensure the protection of natural resources and women's rights in Gbarzon District.
