“Breaking the Silence: Ending FGM in Liberia”
When a girl is born, she carries within her the promise of a future filled with dreams, possibilities, and potential. But for too many girls in Liberia, that future is cut short by a harmful practice that has existed for generations — Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM).
FGM is often hidden behind the curtain of tradition, yet its impact is painfully clear. It brings lifelong health complications such as infections, difficulties in childbirth, chronic pain, and trauma that scars the mind and spirit. More than this, it violates the most basic of rights: a girl’s right to safety, dignity, and choice.
We must understand: ending FGM is not a rejection of culture, but a protection of life. Culture is meant to uplift and give identity, not to cause suffering. As Liberians, our strength lies in building traditions that celebrate women and girls, not harm them.
Imagine a Liberia where every girl is free to attend school without fear, to grow into leadership, to raise her voice without being silenced by trauma. That vision begins with us. Parents, community leaders, faith leaders, and policymakers all have a role to play in ending FGM.
