Today, the United Nations joined the Ministry of Youth and Sports and partners to commemorate International Youth Day 2026 and celebrate the relaunch of YouthConnekt Liberia under the theme, “Unified Knowledge, Shared Futures: Liberians Innovating through Digital Partnerships.”

The celebration brought together government, development partners, civil society, student organizations, and young people to reaffirm a shared commitment to unlocking the potential of Liberia’s youth through skills development, digital inclusion, quality education, entrepreneurship, employment, innovation, and meaningful participation in governance and decision-making.

With 75 per cent of Liberia’s population under the age of 35, young people are central to the country’s democratic resilience, economic transformation, peace, and sustainable development.

The message is clear: young people are not only the future—they are the present and active drivers of Liberia’s development. 🇱🇷

The UN remains committed to working with the Government of Liberia and partners to bridge the digital divide, expand opportunities, and ensure that every young person has the knowledge, skills, and platforms needed to shape a more inclusive and prosperous Liberia.

UN Reaffirms Support for Liberia’s Journey to Prosperity...backs ARREST Agenda

The United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Liberia’s transition from peace to prosperity by working closely with the Government of Liberia and development partners to accelerate the implementation of the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID).

Speaking during the AAID National Steering Committee meeting in Monrovia on Tuesday, August 11, United Nations Resident Coordinator and Deputy Chair of the AAID National Steering Committee, Christine N. Umutoni, stressed the need for Liberia to shift from dependence on traditional aid toward sustainable financing driven by domestic resources, climate finance, private investment, innovative financing, and stronger partnerships.

Umutoni emphasized that investing in Liberia's people through quality education, skills development, job creation, healthcare, economic empowerment, and digital inclusion remains essential to achieving sustainable national development.

She also called for stronger institutions, greater accountability, and increased investment in key sectors including human capital development, economic transformation, food systems, digital innovation, and climate resilience.

According to the UN Resident Coordinator, Liberia's long-term success will be determined by the strength of its institutions, the empowerment of its citizens, the investment it attracts, and the opportunities it creates for future generations.

Addressing the meeting, Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai described inclusive development as a shared national responsibility and urged all Liberians to contribute to advancing the country's development agenda.

President Boakai commended government institutions, development partners, civil society organizations, and citizens for their continued efforts, noting that despite existing challenges, Liberia has made meaningful progress that deserves recognition.

He further emphasized the importance of maintaining honest and constructive engagement with development partners, saying such collaboration strengthens national development efforts and improves the country's ability to deliver results.

The Liberian leader then called for sustained cooperation to build stronger institutions, improve development strategies, and ensure that national resources are effectively utilized to benefit all Liberians.

The United Nations reaffirmed its commitment to continue supporting Liberia's development journey, working alongside the government and partners to transform peace into lasting prosperity.

The United Nations in Liberia has reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Government of Liberia and partners to accelerate the implementation of the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID) and translate national priorities into tangible results for communities across the country.

Speaking at the AAID National Steering Committee meeting in Monrovia on August 11, UN Resident Coordinator and Deputy Chair of the AAID National Steering Committee, H.E. Christine N. Umutoni, emphasized that Liberia’s development journey must increasingly move from “funding to financing,” with greater use of domestic resources, climate finance, private investment, innovative financing and stronger partnerships.

She also underscored the importance of investing in Liberia’s greatest asset—its people—through education, skills development, jobs, health, economic empowerment and digital inclusion.

The UN Resident Coordinator called for stronger institutions, accountability and a focus on transformative investments that can deliver impact at scale, including in human capital, economic transformation, food systems, digital transformation and climate resilience.

“Liberia’s future will not be determined by the amount of aid it receives. It will be determined by the institutions it builds, the people it empowers, the investment it attracts, and the opportunities it creates.”

President of Liberia, His Excellency, Josseph Nyema Boakai, emphasized that inclusion is a shared responsibility for all. He called on everyone to play their part in advancing national development and ensuring progress reaches all communities.

He also expressed appreciation for the continued efforts of government institutions, partners, civil society, and citizens, noting that while challenges remain, important progress has been made and must be recognized.

The President underscored the importance of honest engagement with development partners, noting that constructive assessments help strengthen national efforts.

He highlighted that Liberia’s progress is a collective achievement, calling for continued collaboration to build stronger institutions, improve strategies, and ensure effective use of resources for the benefit of all Liberians.
