On June 13, 2026, we conducted a Youth Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Awareness Tour in Gompa City, Nimba County. The activity brought together young people and community members to increase awareness of GBV prevention and response mechanisms within the community.

This awareness initiative forms part of our broader community-based GBV response strategy, which aims to empower community members with the knowledge and information necessary to support survivors and facilitate their access to justice and essential services.

Through targeted awareness messages, participants gained a better understanding of the different forms of GBV, the importance of reporting incidents, available support systems for survivors, and the role of community members in promoting a safe and protective environment for all.

Join this global conversation on how regional frameworks have shaped state accountability on violence against women and girls. At the global level, state obligations to end violence against women and girls are grounded in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). On the regional side, the Convention of Belém do Pará and the Istanbul Convention set important standards. They have helped advance legal norms, build accountability mechanisms, and show what sustained implementation can achieve. They also reveal gaps, uneven enforcement, and political pushback.

Building on these lessons, this webinar turns to the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls at this key moment. What role do process, content, and implementation play in shaping a strong convention? How does the AUCEVAWG measure against existing regional standards? Where does it need to go further?

Together, we will look at achievements and limits, and the changes needed for the AUCEVAWG to deliver in practice for women and girls across contexts.

PRESS STATEMENT
Gender Ministry Rejects Philipbert Brown's Fake Data

The attention of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has been drawn to an article titled “DAYLIGHT FOR SALE: LIBERIA’S ONLINE PROSTITUTION BOOM AND THE MINISTRY THAT WENT DARK,” authored by Mr. Phillibert S. Brown and circulated on Facebook.

In the article, Brown alleged that “the Ministry of Gender’s own sources put known s*x workers at 1,822, but admit the real number is three times higher, with children as young as 11 entering the trade in Monrovia alone.” The Ministry categorically states that it did not release such information, nor did it provide any confidential data or official sources to Mr. Brown.

The Ministry strongly rejects the false claims and misrepresentation contained in Mr. Brown’s publication, including assertions that the Ministry supplied confidential statistics or acknowledged the figures referenced in the article.

While the Ministry acknowledges the existence of social and economic challenges confronting many young women and girls across Liberia, it is both unfair and misleading to suggest that the Government is inactive or indifferent to these issues.

Notwithstanding Journalist Brown’s claims, the Ministry continues to collaborate with development partners, local non-governmental organizations, and communities across the country to provide protection services, livelihood opportunities, economic empowerment, and social support for vulnerable women, children, and families through several ongoing interventions and national programs.

Through the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP), 227 women-led enterprises have already received grants and business support, directly benefiting 6,611 people, including 5,370 women. To date, more than US$708,967.50 has been disbursed to support women’s economic empowerment and livelihood initiatives nationwide.

Additionally, 128 more women-led enterprises have signed agreements to receive an additional US$350,000 in grant support, which is expected to benefit 3,132 people, 86 percent of whom are women.

Similarly, through the REALISE Project under the Ministry of Gender, the Government of Liberia is supporting approximately 16,000 extremely poor and food-insecure households across Grand Bassa, River Cess, River Gee, and Grand Kru Counties. The project enables vulnerable families to invest in agriculture, small businesses, education, and other livelihood activities aimed at improving living conditions and reducing vulnerability. To date, 16,586 households have already received cash transfers under the project, surpassing the original target.

Besides, several women-led NGOs that are sectorally accredited by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection have initiated social protection awareness activities aimed at discouraging and disabusing the minds of young women and girls against harmful practices, exploitation, and other forms of vulnerability.

These initiatives form part of broader national interventions being implemented by partners to address the root causes of vulnerability affecting women and girls. The efforts are focused on promoting awareness, strengthening community protection mechanisms, expanding economic opportunities, and empowering vulnerable populations to make informed and dignified life choices.

Indeed, these are tangible interventions delivering real impact to vulnerable communities throughout Liberia.

The Ministry encourages Mr. Brown and members of the media to promote responsible journalism and public discourse grounded in facts, accuracy, and verified information, particularly on sensitive issues affecting vulnerable women and girls. The Ministry further urges Mr. Brown and others to redirect their energies toward constructive advocacy, public education, and awareness initiatives rather than engaging in blame games that do little to address the real challenges confronting vulnerable communities across Liberia.

The media remains a powerful tool for social transformation and should be utilized to inspire hope, promote accountability, and support national efforts aimed at protecting, empowering, and uplifting women, children, and disadvantaged populations.

Meanwhile, the Ministry remains fully committed to protecting women and children, strengthening social protection systems, supporting vulnerable households, and creating opportunities for empowerment and economic independence.

Every safe birth has a story, and at the heart of it is often a midwife.

On this , we recognize the key role midwives play in safeguarding the health and dignity of women, newborns, and communities.

They remain central to strong health systems, providing essential care to mothers and babies.
Yet many continue to work under pressure, with limited resources and support. This gap needs deliberate attention and long-term commitment.

Today, we celebrate their dedication and call for sustained action to strengthen the midwifery workforce, because every mother deserves quality care, and every life deserves a safe beginning.
