Today, we celebrate two important milestones: the induction of new members into the medica Liberia and the launch of the revised Stress- and (STA) Manual for Women's Empowerment.
-----------
The revised manual was done in collaboration with medica mondiale e. V. captures about 2 decades of learning and experience in supporting women, girls and communities affected by sexual and gender-based violence.
------------
Over the past week, participants engaged in intensive Stress- and Trauma-Sensitive Approach (STA) refresher training, strengthening their knowledge and skills to facilitate trauma-sensitive approaches in their work and communities.
------------
Together with our partners Adwanga Liberia, Rising Youth Mentorship Initiative, and medica mondiale e. V., we celebrate a new chapter of learning, collaboration, and impact.

This milestone wouldn't have been possible without the support of medica mondiale e. V. and Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) .

Congratulations to our newest trainers!

Over the weekend, medica Liberia, alongside members of our boys’ and girls’ clubs, young women volunteers, and partners, engaged bike riders, roadside vendors, and community members in honest conversations about Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (GBV). This action followed the recent incident in Red Light, where a woman was stripped naked in public.
------------------
As communities shared their views, one message remained clear: ending GBV starts with community voices, accountability, and collective action. Ending violence against women also means changing the harmful social norms that excuse, justify, or normalize abuse.
------------------
Let us all speak up, challenge harmful behavior when we see it, and protect the dignity and safety of women and girls in every community.

PRESS STATEMENT
(MONROVIA-LIBERIA, May 7, 2026), The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection strongly condemns the violent public assault, humiliation, and abuse recently inflicted on a woman by a group of men who forcefully pulled her from a motorcycle, stripped her, and subjected her to degrading treatment because of her alleged choice of clothing.

This act was not “cultural correction” or moral enforcement. It was a criminal act and a grave violation of the woman’s human rights and dignity. No individual or group has the authority to violently police another person’s body, clothing, or personal freedom.

The Ministry considers this incident an act of gender-based violence and sexual assault. This degree of abuse against a woman is unacceptable under any circumstance and cannot be justified by cultural, social, or personal beliefs. Violence against women must never be normalized, excused, celebrated, or ignored.

We are deeply concerned by the growing tendency to blame victims instead of condemning perpetrators. Questions about what a woman wore must never overshadow the more important question: why did grown men choose violence, humiliation, and abuse?

The Ministry further condemns all acts of filming, cheering, or defending this attack. Silence and complicity only strengthen the culture of violence and impunity that threatens the safety and dignity of women and girls across Liberia.

We therefore call on the Liberia National Police (LNP) to immediately identify, arrest, and prosecute every individual involved in this assault, including those who visibly participated in the attack captured on video or identified through witnesses' accounts. The law must be applied fully. Mob violence is not justice, and public outrage does not excuse criminal conduct.

The Ministry also calls on women’s rights organizations, civil society institutions, youth groups, religious leaders, and the general public to speak out against all forms of violence against women and girls.

Protecting the dignity, safety, and rights of women is a shared national responsibility.

The Ministry emphasizes that Liberian women and girls must be free to move, work, dress, and live without fear of harassment, assault, or public humiliation. Any society that permits mob attacks against women undermines the principles of justice, human dignity, and national peace.

To the perpetrators of this act, violence does not demonstrate strength, morality, or leadership. True strength is demonstrated through respect, discipline, and the protection of the rights and dignity of others.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has intensified efforts to establish contact with the victim. We remain committed to advocating for justice, accountability, and the protection of all women and girls throughout Liberia.

Yesterday, together with the Embassy of Ireland in Liberia , carried out a joint monitoring visit under the Project in Sinoe County. The visit brought together schools, protection networks, local leaders, and women-led groups to assess progress in preventing and responding to sexual and gender-based violence .
------------------
Across engagements, one thing was clear: community systems are growing stronger. Young people are actively leading conversations on (SRHR), are improving referral pathways for survivors, and women are building economic resilience through groups.
------------------
Discussions with local authorities, health teams, and civil society partners further reinforced the importance of coordination in delivering effective, support.
-------------------
Speaking during the visit, Megan Beare, Development Lead at the Embassy of Ireland, reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to supporting initiatives that protect and empower women and girls in Liberia.

This is what meaningful progress looks like—communities empowered, systems strengthened, and a shared commitment to advancing safety, dignity, and equality for women and girls across Sinoe County.

The Feminist Alliance and partners welcome the Government of Liberia’s allocation of USD 150,000 for safe homes, a step forward in strengthening support for survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). This investment shows growing recognition that survivors need more than words, they need protection, care, and real access to justice.
----------------
But this is just the beginning. Safe homes save lives, and the demand across Liberia continues to grow. We call for timely disbursement, increased funding, and sustained national commitment to ensure no survivor is left without support. Together, we must keep pushing for a system that truly protects and empowers women and girls.

Yesterday, our team in Sinoe County, climaxed International Women’s Month with a resounding parade through the streets of the city, bringing together women, girls, and community members in a powerful show of unity, resilience, and advocacy.
------------
The theme, “Promote Women for National Development,” reflects one of our key focuses, women’s economic empowerment as a pathway to independence and lasting change.
--------------
This vision was reflected in the leadership of our team on the ground, who helped amplify the voices of women and reinforced a powerful message: when women rise, communities and nations rise with them.
