ANOTHER 2025 UPDATE:

Just a small context. Journalism and media are part of an overall ecosystem of democracy, rights and governance. In Liberia, we don't only support journalists and the work of media. We support democracy and governance as well, through grounded collaboration with government institutions and civil society.

In 2025, we played significant role in sustaining Liberia's democratic gains. First, we collaborated with major partners like the NEC Liberia, UNDP Liberia, UN Women Liberia and other to support the conduct of an important senatorial byelection in Nimba County that replaced late Senator Prince Y. Johnson. Our support contributed to the overall peaceful nature and conduct of the election.

Our partner, Messengers of Peace- Liberia Inc(MOP-Liberia Inc) conducted two dedicated public fora on youth civic education and non-violence. The fora, held in Ganta on April 15 and Sanniquellie on April 22 brought together at least 202 participants, mainly young people to understand their role in a peaceful election, reinforcing inclusion and civic accountability. In addition to students, participants also were also civil society representatives, local leaders, and the media.

Twelve other fora were held across Liberia, bringing together an estimated 1,148 people from diverse demographics face-to face with stakeholders to discuss pertinent democracy, human rights, accountability and governance issues.

The last of these public fora was held in Monrovia in October. It featured Cllr. Lamii Kpargoi Commissioner at the Office of the Ombudsman; Dr. Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu, Executive Director of the Office for the Establishment of the War & Economic Crimes Court; Dr. Moses Ziah II, Director of the Mental Health Unit at the Ministry of Health; and Mr. Perkins E.T. Boye, President of the University of Liberia Association of Students with Disabilities.

Interventions like this complement overall support to democracy, governance and rights; and we thank the European Union in Liberia for supporting us through the Liberia Media Empowerment Project (LMEP).

2025 HIGHLIGHT:

With funding from the from European Union under the Liberia Media Empowerment Project (LMEP), Internews Europe trained at least 73 practicing journalists in fact checking and verification between 2024 and 2025. By end of this year, at least 33 newsrooms across the country have a reporter or two trained by the project in fact checking - nurturing a new culture in everyday journalism.

We've also trained and exposed more than 450 university students studying journalism, media or mass communications, student journalists as well of motivated young people in identifying and responding to misinformation, fake news and promoting fact-checking - through elaborate collaboration with journalism-teaching universities. With these universities, we rolled out dedicated public symposia to educate the public and promote fact checking and verification of news content.

Thanks to our partner, Local Voices Liberia for leading these great efforts.

Good morning, Liberia. Compliments of the Season.

Did you know that Internews won a new project? Ohh Yes. We did. Internews' Earth Journalism Network (EJN) Forest Governance Media Initiative (FGMI) is a multi-country project for Cameroon, Liberia, Ghana, Vietnam and Indonesia.

We aim to support the production of stories that raise awareness about and contribute to forest governance processes such as legal reforms and policy implementation, and drive conversation among stakeholders at local, national, regional and international levels.

We've launched new call for proposals that focus on topics or stories that have not been widely covered.

If you're a Liberian or are interested in covering forest governance and environment issues in Liberia, this is your opportunity. Shoot your shots.

Early September this year, Internews in Liberia held new conversations with the Press Union of Liberia towards strengthening our historic relationship and fostering greater enabling environment for a free press in Liberia. The PUL has been one of our pioneer and reliable partners in the country.

The conversations in September were baby steps for the rollout of specific activities under the Liberia Media Empowerment Project (LMEP), funded by the European Union in Liberia.

Last week, we officially informed the PUL that it was okay to move ahead with a direct subgrant. In the coming weeks, we will hold series of meetings to discuss the design, inputs, expected outcomes and all necessary details regarding the partnership.

We look forward to working always with the PUL.

Today, during a strategic meeting, Liberia's Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications, Republic of Liberia informed and thanked Internews Europe for helping them achieve a major trigger set by the World Bank as a econdition for direct budget support.

That trigger was the 'development and submission to the president, a draft legislation on personal data privacy and protection. This trigger was just one of the many set by the Bank - tasked to different government ministries and agencies.

But we helped the government achieved the specific trigger on personal data protection. In June this year, Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr submitted to the legislature the draft bill, developed by the Ministry with Internews' support under the Liberia Media Empowerment Project (LMEP).

By the achieving the trigger, the World Bank has contributed Forty Million US Dollars to the national budget for fiscal year 2026.

Thanks to the Ministry for accepting our support. Thanks to the European Union in Liberia for supporting the Liberia Media Empowerment Project (LMEP).

These are some of the impacts we make towards supporting and strengthening democracy, governance and rights.

With shrinking funding, these impacts remain unsustainable, and in worst cases, just dreams on papers.

We look forward, and impore the Honorable House of Representatives to swiftly pass the bill into law, as envisioned by the president and the Liberian public.

Pictures were taken at a recent EU-funded African Union/GIZ workshop and dtakeholder discussion on the development of a national data policy for Liberia.

Internews Europe is ending the year on high notes in Liberia. We are making significant progress towards digitizing access to recent elections campaign promises - reminding politicians about promises they made during election campaigns, empowering citizens to hold duty-bearers accountable for what they promised during campaigns and setting up a fata center of election promises that the media, civil society and researchers can rely on as a credible source.

This online tracking portal will be a big win for all users - ultimately supporting Liberia's overall electoral democracy and governance systems. We are doing our best to develop it in a way that allows easy upgrading during future elections in Liberia.

The portal will feature content in different formats - texts, pictures, links, audios, and possibly videos - responding to different user preferences.

The portal will be owned and managed by our partner, Local Voices Liberia

It's important to note here that the final interface may look different from what's displayed on this picture as work is progressing and feedbacks are being incorporated along the way.

Thanks to the EU for funding the Liberia Media Empowerment Project (LMEP). With every intervention, we make Liberia's DGR better.

To the European Union in Liberia, this is another under .

Last week was lit for the Liberia Media Empowerment Project (LMEP), funded by the EU - European Union in Liberia.

Below is an update from one key activity held closed to the weekend by our partner Local Voices Liberia .

💡 𝑬𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒐𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒘'𝒔 𝑱𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒔: 6𝒕𝒉 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒕-𝑪𝒉𝒆𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒚𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒖𝒎 𝑹𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒑!

What an incredible day of learning and engagement at the 6th Edition Fact-Checking Symposium, hosted by Local Voices Liberia (LMEP/Internews)!

Our event at the Liberia Learning Center, Paynesville on November 7, focused on the critical theme: "Stopping Disinformation to Enhance Democracy – What Students Need to Learn."
Impact at PROJAL University College

The energy from the journalism students of Projal University College was palpable! We were thrilled to host so many future media professionals who engaged deeply with the tools and strategies needed to combat information disorder. They left equipped with practical knowledge on verification, ethical reporting, and recognizing emerging digital threats, strengthening their commitment to media integrity in Liberia.

𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒕 𝑷𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒍 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒖𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏

A major highlight was the robust panel discussion featuring two of Liberia's leading voices and moderated by broadcast journalist, Fabian Kwieh of ELBC.

𝑷𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑸𝒖𝒂𝒚𝒆: The Certified AI Governance Expert and Director of Programs and Projects, WAICTANT, challenged students to think critically about AI's role in governance and the urgent need for responsible technology adoption to uphold democratic values.

𝑯𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒂𝒉 𝑵. 𝑮𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒉: Co-founder and Chief-Editor of the Stage Media (TSM), shared invaluable, real-world experience on the front lines of fact-checking, demonstrating how precision and adherence to IFCN principles are essential for media resilience.
Their expertise underscored the symposium's goal: bridging the gap between academic learning and the high-stakes demands of modern journalism.

What’s Next? Mark Your Calendars!

We are not slowing down! The conversation continues as we prepare to take the 7th Edition Fact-Checking Symposium to AME University later this month. We look forward to engaging with another cohort of bright journalism minds to continue this vital dialogue on safeguarding our information space.

The Fact-Check Symposium is powered by the Liberia Media Empowerment Project (LMEP) led by Internews in Liberia with funding from European Union in Liberia.

Stay tuned for the official date and details!

We're ending the week on high notes with a very successful meeting today with the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications, Independent Information Commission- IIC and Center for Media Studies and Peace Building - designing engagement strategies towards the successful passage of the Personal Data Privacy & Protection Legislation, which was submitted to the national legislature by the Liberian President a few months ago.

The draft bill, which went through public and stakeholder validation back in 2024, was developed in collaboration with key stakeholders in Liberia, mainly the Ministry of Posts, Justice Ministry-Lib, Press Union-of Liberia, the Publishers Association of Liberia, CEMESP, among others.

Today's meeting, chaired by deputy posts minister for technical services, S Mohammed Massaley, represents a key coordination between relevant institutions leading the development and passage of the bill into law. The meeting also discussed progress made towards the development of Liberia's national data policy, which will be a big addition to the data legislation when passed.

FEATURE -

Fact Checking is going to be ever-present in Liberia. Thanks to the incredible pioneering steps by Local Voices Liberia. With a fully functional desk, Local Voices continues to combat all forms of malinformation through public fora, media literacy through syndicated radio content, newsletters, and university courses.

The activities are making a real impact. They help to curb the spread of misinformation, holding politicians accountable, and empowering citizens to make informed decisions.

“Fact-checking is here to stay, and we will continue to strive to make it even better. We may not always be heard because we often work in the background, but our impact speaks volumes,” says Jerry Gaye, LVL Coordinator of the Fact Checking Desk.

Here is Jerry getting ready to produce another edition of The Fact Check Radio Segment.

Thanks to the European Union in Liberia for funding the Liberia Media Empowerment Project (LMEP).
