In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme (EVP), in partnership with the ECOWAS National Office (ENO) and the West Africa Health Organisation (WAHO), donated several food and non-food items to orphanages.
The event, which was held in Barnesville Kabba on Thursday, June 19, brought together students and administration from the benefiting institutions, the Oscar Violina School of the Deaf and the Sis Aryee orphanages. Also present were Stakeholders from the Ministry of Education - Liberia, ENO, WAHO, ECOWAS Volunteers Programme, and community dwellers.
Speaking at the celebration the deputy head of ECOWAS National Office Mr. Amos Tubor appreciated the heads of the befitting institutions for caring for the under privileged.
He stressed that the EVP has been doing a great job in making ECOWAS visible by reaching out to the people. He emphasised that ECOWAS is now ECOWAS of the people and so identifying with the needy in such a way is timely for this 50th anniversary.
For her part, Mrs Geraldine Nyenkan representing the Ministry of Education appreciated ECOWAS and the volunteers who are contributing to the educational sector of Liberia.
Also speaking at the celebration WAHO representative Ms. Hawa O Sana spoke on the intervention of ECOWAS within the Health Sector of Liberia. She also provided sexual education to the pupils on the use of reusable sanitary pads.
For his part, the Country Coordinator of the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme Alhaji Sheku Nouhan Kamara expressed gratitude to participants and partners for their continued support to the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme. He also acknowledged the impact of volunteers serving in Liberia and encouraged colleagues to continue in that trajectory.
