PROMOTING PEACE & UNITY - EVP FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT @ CAREYSBURG DISTRICT

As part of efforts to promote peace and unity, ECOWAS Volunteer Richard A. Kayode successfully organized an Inter-School Football Competition within the Careysburg District of Monrovia, Liberia. The tournament brought together young talents from various schools in a spirited and peaceful atmosphere that fostered sportsmanship, teamwork, and community bonding.

Beyond the excitement on the field, the event also served as a platform to raise awareness about the ECOWAS Volunteer Programme (EVP) and its presence in the district. Through this initiative, students were engaged not just through football, but also inspired by the values of regional integration, youth development, and peacebuilding that EVP stands for.

As part of ECOWAS Day celebrations on May 28, the ECOWAS Volunteer Programme (EVP) team actively participated in a successful roadshow aimed at raising awareness about the programme and offering free medical checkups to the public. The event attracted a large crowd, with trained medical professionals providing essential health screenings such as blood pressure and blood sugar checks. Informational tents were also set up to educate participants about ECOWAS Vision 2050 and the life-changing opportunities available through the EVP.
Beyond healthcare, the roadshow served as a platform to engage the public on the value of volunteerism, the impact of past EVP participants, and the benefits of serving under ECOWAS. The initiative not only promoted regional integration and development but also demonstrated EVP’s strong commitment to community service and accessibility.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme (EVP), in partnership with the ECOWAS National Office (ENO) and the West Africa Health Organisation (WAHO), donated several food and non-food items to orphanages.

The event, which was held in Barnesville Kabba on Thursday, June 19, brought together students and administration from the benefiting institutions, the Oscar Violina School of the Deaf and the Sis Aryee orphanages. Also present were Stakeholders from the Ministry of Education - Liberia, ENO, WAHO, ECOWAS Volunteers Programme, and community dwellers.

Speaking at the celebration the deputy head of ECOWAS National Office Mr. Amos Tubor appreciated the heads of the befitting institutions for caring for the under privileged.
He stressed that the EVP has been doing a great job in making ECOWAS visible by reaching out to the people. He emphasised that ECOWAS is now ECOWAS of the people and so identifying with the needy in such a way is timely for this 50th anniversary.

For her part, Mrs Geraldine Nyenkan representing the Ministry of Education appreciated ECOWAS and the volunteers who are contributing to the educational sector of Liberia.

Also speaking at the celebration WAHO representative Ms. Hawa O Sana spoke on the intervention of ECOWAS within the Health Sector of Liberia. She also provided sexual education to the pupils on the use of reusable sanitary pads.

For his part, the Country Coordinator of the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme Alhaji Sheku Nouhan Kamara expressed gratitude to participants and partners for their continued support to the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme.
