Women's Action For Rights and Empowerment (WARE) is a nonprofit organization advancing human rights through advocacy with special focus on Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM). THEMATIC FOCUS: WARE has a broad thematic agenda on Women’s Rights, promoting women political participation with strategic focus on Harmful Traditional Practices and Gender Based Violence (GBV), Social and Economic Empower
ment, and Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights. These form the core of our field and advocacy work as a framework for advancing the rights of women and girls in Liberia. HUMAN RIGHTS:
WARE works to raise awareness and spread understanding on human rights, with specific focus on increasing respect for women’s human rights in Liberia. This forms the platform upon which the other four thematic areas are built. HARMFUL TRADITIONAL PRACTICES: WARE works to eradicate harmful cultural and traditional practices like Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM), and others that are in contradiction to international human rights. SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT: WAFGEM works to achieve social and economic empowerment for women through income generating activities as a means of empowering women to be able to stand up for their rights, demand equal access to social services, hold duty bearers accountable and challenge structural causes of poverty. GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: Women are actors of change, as such WARE works in collaboration with government structures, communities and families to end all violence against women and girls. The organisation seeks to address the root causes of GBV, which are also in many cases linked to cultural perceptions where women are treated as a property of the husband. It addresses the root causes of inequality in power relations between men and women. SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH: WARE works to protect women’s sexual and reproductive health rights as this is another important aspect of women’s well-being. WARE aims at enhancing the role and well-being of women in the Liberian society.
