CYAN Calls for Urgent Investigation into Alleged Medical Negligence at ELWA Hospital

The Concern Youth Action Network (CYAN) is deeply troubled by the alarming public outcry from Ms. Jamesetta Kugmah regarding the critical medical complications she has suffered following an alleged mishandled C-section procedure at ELWA Hospital. Ms. Kugmeh’s distressing account details severe post-surgical complications, including kidney failure, liver damage, the removal of her womb, urethral collapse, burns, and prolonged suffering without clear answers or accountability.

Her plea for transparency and justice cannot be ignored. CYAN stands in solidarity with Ms. Kugmeh and all patients who entrust their lives to medical professionals, expecting competent and ethical care. This case raises serious concerns about medical procedures, patient rights, and healthcare accountability in Liberia.

We therefore call on the following institutions to launch an immediate and thorough investigation into these allegations:

Liberia Medical and Dental Council, Beach way, 19st Sinkor

Liberia Board for Nursing and Midwifery

Ministry of Health, Republic of Liberia

Healthcare institutions must uphold their duty to preserve life, ensure safe medical practices, and maintain the trust of the public. Any form of medical negligence must be addressed with transparency and accountability to prevent further loss of life or irreversible harm to innocent patients.

We urge ELWA Hospital to provide a detailed report on Ms. Kugmeh’s case and offer clear explanations regarding the decisions made during her treatment. Additionally, we call on JFK Medical Center to provide the highest level of care to stabilize her condition as investigations proceed.

As a youth-driven advocacy organization, CYAN will continue to stand for justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights, including access to safe and ethical healthcare for all Liberians.

Nowai Tokpah needs our help urgently!

Please, family, let’s help this beautiful baby!
Her father left her with the mother since and the mother has been supporting her since.
According to sources, It all started with pains in her eye when her mother took her to a local clinic in B**g County. She was given an eye drop, which she applied for a couple of months. To her surprise, her daughter's eye started to grow like this.

This lady is currently in Gbarnga since she came from the bush.

For the last six months, she has not slept because of the pain.
Her Mother, Annie Mulbah wants to take her to JFK but there is no money.
Please, let’s show some love as usual because this one is urgent.

Press Statement
Concern Youth Action Network Condemns the Abuse of a Child at a Local Garage

For Immediate Release

February 21, 2025

The Concern Youth Action Network (COYAN) strongly condemns the inhumane treatment of a nine-year-old child who was subjected to cruel punishment at a generator repair garage. According to reports, the child—who is a trainee—was forced to endure physical abuse by the shop owner, a Guinean national, who sat on him for over twenty minutes as a form of punishment.

This act is not only a gross violation of the child’s rights but also a reflection of the abuse many children face when placed in informal apprenticeship programs instead of being given access to proper trade schools. Child labor, exploitation, and abuse must not be tolerated under any circumstances.

As an organization committed to youth empowerment and child protection, we call on the relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, and the Liberia National Police, to immediately investigate this case and hold the perpetrator accountable.

Furthermore, we urge parents, guardians, and community members to prioritize proper training environments for children and report any instances of abuse. No child should suffer in silence.

COYAN remains committed to advocating for children’s rights and ensuring that all young people receive safe and dignified opportunities for learning and growth.
