GOV’T TO LAUNCH SUSTAINED GARBAGE COLLECTION INITIATIVE

The Government of Liberia is preparing to begin a sustained garbage collection and sanitation campaign in eight counties, with the initiative scheduled to start on October 1, 2026.

The campaign is being implemented through the Special Presidential Committee on the Clean City Initiative and is intended to strengthen urban sanitation and waste management while responding to environmental challenges across the country.

Chairman of the Clean City Initiative, Hon. Bill McGill Jones, says the pilot program, envisioned by President Joseph N. Boakai, will address sanitation challenges in 14 cities across the eight counties.

The Liberian Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs Jones, says the exercise is expected to provide employment opportunities for about 1,250 young people.

He says the program will involve sustained garbage collection and clean-up activities in public spaces, including beaches and waterways.

It will also seek to increase public awareness of city ordinances and emphasize the shared responsibility of communities and individuals in keeping their surroundings clean.

Hon. Jones disclosed the plans Thursday, September 10, 2026, during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing in Monrovia, where he appeared alongside Monrovia City Mayor John Siaffa.

According to Min. Jones, the Clean City Initiative brings together city mayors, community leaders, residents, county authorities, and other stakeholders as part of a collaborative effort to address sanitation challenges.

He says the initiative is coordinating with the mayors of Monrovia and Paynesville, along with authorities in 14 cities across Liberia, to advance a practical and sustained approach to improving sanitation.

The initiative has identified 48 communities, Minister Jones says, with four communities expected to be targeted each week for intensified garbage collection, clean-up exercises, and public awareness activities focusing on city ordinances and the consequences of violations.

Meanwhile, Monrovia City Mayor John Siaffa says the Monrovia City Corporation is taking measures to bring its sanitation activities in line with the Clean City Initiative.

Mayor Siaffa says the City Corporation is strengthening its garbage collection and waste management systems, including moving some dumping sites to new locations.

He points to the relocation of a garbage dumping site from Wein Town to Crozerville as one of the measures being undertaken to improve waste management.

Mayor Siaffa estimates that Monrovia produces approximately 250 tons of waste each day.

He also says plans are being explored to convert waste into fertilizer as part of broader efforts to support sustainable waste management.

The Mayor further discloses that the Monrovia City Corporation has established a digital system and is engaging businesses and communities to improve garbage collection, waste disposal, and compliance with approved waste disposal sites.

The authorities say the initiative is designed to promote increased public participation and strengthen collective efforts to create cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable communities throughout Liberia.

Since yesterday, I have seen and read people questioning HE Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr authority to appoint Deputy Minister for Public Affairs at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection-Republic of Liberia.

Here is my advice: if you see something new happen and you don’t have clear understanding, do some research before making any public comment or statement.

On May 16, 1974, the Legislature approved an amended Legislation “An Act Amend the New Executive Law to provide the Appointment of more than one Deputy Minister within a Ministry” authorizing The President appoint many Deputy Ministers in Government as deemed necessary based on prevailing situations.

For Immediate Release

South Africa Pledges High-Powered Technical Mission to Support Liberia’s Peace and Reconciliation Museum

September 2, 2026

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA:— The Government of South Africa has pledged to send a fully funded, high-powered technical, tourism and cultural delegation to Liberia to support the establishment of a proposed National Peace, Reconciliation and Memorial Museum.

The commitment was made during high-level discussions between South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Hon. Gayton McKenzie, and Liberia’s Minister of State without Portfolio, Hon. Hadja Mamaka Bility, who led a delegation appointed and dispatched by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. as part of his Administration’s broader efforts to advance national peace, reconciliation, historical preservation and healing.

Minister McKenzie directed that the South African mission include senior experts from the country’s leading museums, memorial sites, archives, cultural institutions, artifact-repatriation initiatives and institutions with experience in South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission process.

The delegation will travel to Monrovia to conduct technical workshops, share expertise and support Liberia in developing credible systems for collecting, preserving and presenting the country’s history while maintaining the truth and integrity of its past.

Welcoming the commitment, Minister Bility said Liberia looks forward to working closely with the South African Government and its technical institutions as the museum initiative moves toward implementation.

She said the planned South African mission will coincide with efforts to convene the inaugural steering committee for the proposed museum, creating an opportunity for several days of intensive technical engagement between Liberian and South African experts.

Minister McKenzie described Liberia and South Africa as “brother and sister nations,” recalling Liberia’s historic support for South African freedom fighters during the anti-apartheid struggle.

“We are not going there only to teach. We are also going there to learn from the Liberians,” Minister McKenzie said, emphasizing that the planned engagement would be based on mutual learning and cooperation.

During the four-day South African phase of the study tour, the Liberian delegation held discussions with senior officials responsible for planning, monitoring and evaluation, as well as representatives of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

The delegation also met with the leadership of the University of South Africa (UNISA), where both sides agreed to explore opportunities for knowledge-sharing, specialized training and postgraduate education for Liberians in museum development, archives, peacebuilding and reconciliation.

As part of the tour, the delegation visited the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Hector Pieterson Museum, Mandela House, Freedom Park, Apartheid Museum, UNDP South Africa and other major cultural and historical institutions.

UNDP Resident Representative in Liberia, Ambassador Aliou Mamadou Dia, described the outcome of the engagement as a major boost to Liberia’s museum initiative and reaffirmed UNDP’s support for the Government of Liberia.

The South African commitment follows the successful completion of the Rwanda and South Africa phases of the study tour undertaken by the delegation at the direction of President Boakai.

The delegation is expected to return to Liberia to brief President Boakai on the outcome of the engagements, consolidate lessons from the study tour and begin preparations for the arrival of the South African technical mission.

The proposed National Peace, Reconciliation and Memorial Museum forms part of President Boakai’s broader reconciliation efforts to preserve Liberia’s history, promote national healing and provide present and future generations with an accurate account of the country’s past.
