Former Liberia National Team captain Anthony Laffor fired back at critics of King George Weah.

"Only one king and the greatest of all

You can disrespect him and called him names

In my opinion he has done well for football

He was never a sports minister / LFA president

In his playing days he helped a lot of Liberian including me Ben Teekloh and others

He was the president for Liberia 🇱🇷

Not for football

And to those former players that played on the famous Weah 11 that have issue with him since 2002 why only now?”

The Liberia Amputee National Team is facing disqualification from the 2026 Amputee World Cup in Mexico due to unpaid participation fees of $900,000.

A remaining balance of $2,000 must be paid by Saturday to avoid disqualification. The team has already paid a portion of the fees in installments, but officials are appealing to the government and humanitarian organizations for urgent financial support.

The team has a rich history, having won three Amputee Africa Cup of Nations titles and reaching a World Cup final against Turkey.

A throwback clip from Football Modia’s documentary on Liberian icon George Weah highlights a defining moment of King George taking pride in rescuing the team.

The footage shows that in 1998, the government under former President Charles Taylor failed to provide money for basic needs with the FA unable to even purchase drinking water for players.

Former National Team Goalkeeper Louis B Crayton Jr on ex President Charles Taylor government involvement with the National Team in 2002.

✍️”DON'T BE FOOLED! Every jersey we wore during the 2002 World Cup/ African Cup, qualifications, was paid for by the Charles Taylor government. Everytime we stayed at kings lodge on 9th was paid for by Charles Taylor government.

Every food we ate, was paid for by Charles Taylor government. This is excluding the 5 thousands dollars that was paid to every player that came from abroad. And George weah was being paid 10 thousand as technical director.

These are factual evidence by me and any player on that team, including Edwin Snowe”

According to the Inquirer Newspaper March 26, 1998 publication, former Liberia national team captain George M. Weah in 1998 personally paid US$5,000 to FIFA to settle Liberia’s outstanding dues, ensuring the national team could continue competing internationally. The Inquirer newspaper captured this with the headline “Oppong rescues Liberia again”,

According to newspaper details, the Liberia Football Association had fallen behind on payments to FIFA. George Weah, then at the peak of his career with AC Milan, stepped in and used his own money to cover the debt.

The payment was critical because without it, Liberia was going to be suspended from FIFA competitions. The article emphasized that this was not the first time Weah had “rescued” Liberia because he had a history of financing training camps, travel, and allowances for Lone Star.

Liberia remain the only West African country that has not participated in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the last 23 years.

Can Lonestar finally break that long drought by making to the AFCON 2027? Remember they drawn in group with Mali 🇲🇱, Rwanda 🇷🇼 and Cape Verde 🇨🇻

Liberian Heritage Trio Set for 2026 World Cup Return

Three players of Liberian descent will once again represent North America when the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off, echoing their roles from the 2022 edition. Alphonso Davies, Tim Weah, and Haji Wright are all in line to feature for Canada and the United States, bringing experience and attacking firepower to their respective squads on home soil.

All three made history in Qatar by finding the net for their countries during the 2022 tournament. Davies scored Canada’s first-ever men’s World Cup goal against Croatia on Nov 27, while Weah opened the USA’s account with a strike against Wales on Nov 21.

Wright completed the trio with his goal against the Netherlands on Dec 3, pulling one back for the USMNT in their Round of 16 clash. Their 2022 performances marked a notable moment for Liberian roots on the world stage, and all eyes will be on them to replicate that impact in 2026.

Do you think Liberia would have qualified for a World Cup if we had them representing the Red, White and Blue?
