In Todee District, Rural Montserrado County, many girls have dropped out of school due to teenage pregnancy, early child marriage, and long-standing traditional norms that limit their opportunities. Once they leave the classroom, many lose access to education, skills development, and the hope of a brighter future.

This initiative is committed to changing that reality by supporting 50 girls who dropped out of school to return to learning while gaining practical vocational skills that will enable them to earn a living, become self-reliant, and rebuild their lives with dignity.

A period-friendly world is one where menstruation is seen for what it is: a normal part of life - not something to be ashamed of, hidden away, or held against you.
It's a world where children grow up learning about periods openly and without embarrassment. Where pads, tampons, and other products are affordable for everyone. Where public toilets are clean, safe, and actually usable. And where healthcare doesn't become a matter of luck. In short: a world where no one is left behind - simply because they have a period.

Yet the reality looks very different:
🌍 2.1 billion people worldwide menstruate - around 375 million are menstruating right now.
🚺 Around 500 million people lack adequate access to menstrual hygiene products.
🚻 More than 170 million people do not have access to a toilet.

And beyond the social stigma and health implications, period poverty also has a massive economic impact. When women and girls can't manage their periods safely, they miss school, miss work, and miss out on opportunities that shape their futures. Over time, those missed days add up to something much bigger: hundreds of billions of dollars lost globally every year. In the European Union alone, the annual economic loss is estimated at over €107 billion.

At Action Against Sexual Gender-Based Violence, we are committed to contributing to a more period-friendly world.

But these alarming numbers deserve our attention not only on May 28th, Menstrual Hygiene Day. Menstrual health is a human rights issue, a public health issue, and an economic issue - and it concerns all of us, not only those who menstruate.
