Who says trades like electricity and masonry are only for men?
Skills have no gender restriction. The future belongs to everyone.

IECD Liberia took the conversation on the Hott FM 107.9 Radio Podcast, where powerful testimonies highlighted how women are gaining the confidence to complete training in traditionally male-dominated trades.

These stories reinforce the STRIVE project’s commitment to promoting women’s participation in TVET, safer learning environments, and greater employability.

The conversation was opened by IECD Liberia’s Gender focal person and joined by a TVET trainer, a current student, and a graduate to share their perspectives.

In Liberia, rural women play a vital role in agriculture and local economies. Many engage in activities such as market gardening and fish farming, yet their economic opportunities can be constrained by limited access to technical training, finance, markets, land, and professional networks. 👩 🌾

Gender-inclusive TVET starts with the way we teach.

From October 6–8, IECD Liberia brought together more than 15 participants from vocational education institutions in Gbarnga, B**g County, for a three-day Training of Trainers on Integrating Gender into Pedagogical Practices.

The goal? To challenge gender stereotypes, promote inclusive teaching, and ensure that women and men have equal opportunities to learn, develop skills, and pursue careers in every profession.

Supported by the AFD - Agence Française de Développement and the Government of Liberia, this initiative reinforces IECD’s commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable TVET sector.

The burden of young people successfully moving from skills to jobs cannot squarely be on the shoulders of TVET institutions. It requires a collaborative effort.

🔍 | 78 trainers strengthened their pedagogical competencies to better support young people and entrepreneurs on their path to successful professional integration.

What can we do with the resources we already have around us?

This is one of the questions we are trying to answer through our work under the ILSA Project in Liberia.

As the technical implementing partner, IECD Liberia is continuing to produce and test different compost formulations using locally available resources, particularly livestock manure and other organic materials.

For us, composting is not simply about making compost.
It is about adding value to resources that are already available locally, improving soil fertility and helping farmers access better organic inputs.

But there is another important dimension: the business opportunity.

If we can develop good-quality formulations from local resources, there is potential for local entrepreneurs to build activities around the production, packaging and marketing of organic inputs.

Our latest activity was our fourth composting trial, using a mixture of pig and cow manure. We are carefully monitoring the decomposition process and the quality of each formulation to better understand what works, how it can be improved and how it can be used in crop production.

This is the approach we are trying to promote:
Local resources - value-added products - healthier soils - better farming - business opportunities.
There is still a lot to learn and test, but the potential is there.
And sometimes, innovation does not necessarily mean bringing something new.

It can simply mean looking differently at what we already have.

Through the STRIVE Project, gaps in curricula, trainer capacity, learning facilities and practical training are being addressed to help ensure that young Liberians gain skills that respond to real opportunities in the labour market.

This is not just about training young people. It is about strengthening the system that prepares them for work and entrepreneurship.
