Title: Creation must be cherished
Written by: Korpo Sailley
God created everything and said it was good, and God gave humanity the authority to take care of creation. It was because of the intimate relationship God had with human beings that God entrusted humans with this creation. The Christian environmentalist Calvin B. DeWitt states that “We may enjoy but not destroy the grace of God’s good creation. The tendency for human greed to destroy the faithfulness of the earth is documented in the biblical accounts of human behavior (Ezekiel 34:18, Deut. 20:19; 22:6)”. Our God is related to creation and history not by being immune to space and time but by keeping [God's] promises.
Joseph Sittler insisted that nature comes from God, cannot be apart from God, and it can bear the Glory of God. We all should know that nature does not forgive; the way we unjustly treat God’s creation returns right at us in a negative way. As much as God has the power over the cosmos, God also gave us the power to take care of it, so if we are not taking care of it then it will come in return to us as a disaster. So, we all need to care for creation, love creation and protect creation as a way of fulfilling our stewardship for God’s creation.
When people think about God, they often refer to God as a supreme being who reigns over and above the world as an almighty ruler. When something goes wrong in nature, such as occurs under climate change, it is immediately assumed that this is caused by God. But we should remember the third Ecojustice Principle of Voice which states that “the earth is capable of raising its voice in celebration and against injustice”.
Caring for creation is everyone’s business.
