WE THE PEOPLE Continues Anti-Drugs Awareness Campaign

Today, our team and affiliate organizations visited the Old Voker Mission School in Paynesville City as part of our ongoing effort to combat illicit drugs and substance abuse.

The danger posed to our society by drugs is real and growing. Protecting the future of Liberia requires all of us—parents, students, leaders, and communities—working together to keep our young people safe and focused.

Speaking to the students, our Secretary General, Nichols Barti, delivered this powerful message:

“You can be the best surgeon tomorrow, but once you are addicted to drugs, no one will trust you to perform surgery on them. I have never seen a ‘zoko’ surgeon.
You can study to become the best accountant, but I have never seen any ‘zoko’ employed as an accountant in any bank or institution. Stay as far away as you can from drugs and substance abuse.”

“Liberia Says No To Drugs”

On behalf of the Chairman and the leadership of WE THE PEOPLE, INC., I extend our deepest and most heartfelt appreciation to the organizers of today’s impactful and symbolic protest — a powerful national statement against the rise and spread of illicit drug use in Liberia.

We are especially grateful to our affiliate organizations — MOTARWY, West Africa Drug Policy Network, LIBxRecords Foundation, EMSASA, Justice Forum of Liberia, and GLHF — who not only organized and mobilized with passion and courage but also stood resiliently through the rain alongside thousands of committed citizens to demand change. Your presence, voices, banners, chants, and discipline have sent a resounding message across Liberia and to the international community: Liberia will no longer tolerate the plague of narcotics and substance abuse.

This protest was not just a moment. It was a movement — a spark of national awakening that demonstrated the strength of collective civic action. By standing up, marching, and speaking out, we have brought visibility and urgency to an issue that has long gone under-addressed. We have declared boldly and without apology: “Protect our youth, save our future!”

Let us all take pride in the role we played today. But let us not stop here. Let this be the beginning of an enduring nationwide mobilization, community by community, school by school, street by street. The fight to save Liberia’s future must continue — and it will.

Since its founding in 2021, WE THE PEOPLE has remained steadfast in its commitment to combat illicit drug use and substance abuse across Liberia. These threats—like Ebola and COVID-19—transcend political, religious, and ethnic boundaries. They represent a national health emergency, undermine public safety, and corrode our economic stability. Addressing this crisis requires unified action across all sectors of society.

As the umbrella organization for concerned advocacy groups, WE THE PEOPLE hereby endorses and pledges full support for the August 7 Anti-Drug Protest. We call on all Liberians—community leaders, youth, institutions, and citizens—to rise in solidarity and send a clear message to the world: Liberia rejects illicit drugs.

Beginning August 7, let us collectively declare Liberia a no-go zone for drugs and substance abuse. Let us become vigilant guardians of our communities, districts, and cities.


While WE THE PEOPLE recognize the progress made by this government, including the building and renovating of rehabs, the increment in the budget of the LDEA, and the increased operation of the LDEA including high-profile arrest of traffickers, we are compelled to point out that this remains largely insufficient due to the alarming rate and level the drug crisis has reached in Liberia. We therefore urge the government to intensify its efforts. The scale of addiction, trafficking, and community destabilization demands a deeper, sustained, and evidence-based response.

WE THE PEOPLE reaffirms its readiness to collaborate with government authorities through advocacy, community outreach, capacity building, awareness campaigns, and advisory support. Our commitment is unwavering.

The August 7 protest is more than a demonstration—it is a national awakening, a call for coordinated and enduring action from government, security institutions, civil society, and all Liberians.

We remain resolute in our mission. We invite every Liberian, every institution, and every community to stand with us. Together, we will reclaim our nation from the grip of illicit drugs and restore hope, dignity, and productivity to a generation at risk.
