From Despair to Hope
A mother in one of our supported Mother Support Groups was abandoned by her husband and left alone to feed her children. The little money she earned from selling coal was taken and used to support another woman. Overwhelmed with stress and worry, she lost weight and felt completely alone.
Through the ACF BEHOL MHPSS intervention, she joined a Mother Support Group where fellow women listened, comforted, and encouraged her. Slowly, she regained her strength, confidence, and hope.
Today, she is emotionally restored, happy, and reunited with her husband.
In her words:
“The mothers made me strong again. Today I have peace in my heart.”
AFD support is not just funding programs — it is restoring families, dignity, and hope.

Action Against Hunger, in collaboration with Expertise France, was delighted to host a delegation from the French Development Agency (AFD) from 26–30 January 2026 as part of the AFD funded Health System Strengthening Projects (BEHOL and H.E.A.L.T.H) in Liberia. The mission covered two counties—Montserrado and Margibi—where the project is supporting improvements in primary healthcare delivery.
Throughout the visit, the AFD team engaged with key stakeholders, including Ministry of Health officials, County Health Teams, health facility staff, community leaders, and contractors responsible for rehabilitation and new construction works for Primary Level 1 and 2 facilities. The interactions provided valuable insights into progress on infrastructure upgrades, health service delivery, and community engagement.
Facilities and Communities Visited
• Gbondoi Health Facility and Community, St. Paul River District
• Tenegar Health Facility and Community, St. Paul River District
• Koons Town Clinic and Community, Todee District
• Yeamai Clinic and Community, Kakata District, Margibi County
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Health, the County Health Teams, the dedicated health facility staff, our BEHOL partners—Community Healthcare Initiative (CHI) and the Liberia Association for Psychosocial Services (LAPS)—as well as the contractors (the Classical Group of Companies) and community structures (Mother Support Groups, Father Support Groups, Adolescent Peer Support Groups, Youth Support Groups, Community Savings and Loans Association Groups) and above all, our staff members whose support and coordination contributed to a highly successful and productive visit.

With Funding from AFD - Agence Française de Développement, Action Against Hunger is implementing the “Better Health Outcomes for Liberians” (BEHOL) Project, a multi-sectoral strengthening initiative in Margibi, Montserrado, and Nimba Counties.

Over the past ten years, Liberia has made considerable progress in its development, striving to reduce poverty and improve access to basic services for its population, after years of crisis marked by the Ebola epidemic and, more recently, COVID-19.

Despite this progress, food insecurity and malnutrition remain a major concern in the country.

➡️Action Against Hunger is working closely with national and local authorities, as well as international and local partners, to reduce chronic malnutrition.

With funding from Irish Aid, the Liberia WASH Consortium supports communities by setting up kitchen and backyard gardens, transforming nutrition outcomes and fostering community resilience.

Attached to Village/Community and Loan Savings Associations or Mother Support Groups, these vibrant gardens span two to four acres and involve 15 to 30 dedicated community members.

From hearty staples like cassava, eddoes, and potatoes to a colorful array of vegetables including bitter ball, cabbage, and okra, these gardens cultivate a bounty of nutritious produce.

Before the gardens, families often struggled with limited diets, but now, with the gardens' diverse offerings, households enjoy meals two to three times a day, supplementing staples with fresh greens and flavorful peppers.

Beyond nourishment, these gardens are driving tangible change, from reducing malnutrition rates in communities like Sackie Town and Tarr Town to empowering participants with valuable agricultural knowledge in Yarkpah Town and Isaac Mulbah.

Additionally, the "eat some, sell some" approach to harvesting not only sustains families but also generates income, enabling savings for VSLA shares, educational expenses, and healthcare services.

Looking ahead, project participants are eager to cultivate new skills, from climate-smart agriculture and pest management to optimizing planting techniques, ensuring the gardens continue to thrive and benefit all.
