As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen health systems and identify priority areas for support, WHO Representative to Liberia, Dr Olushayo Olu, and the WHO team visited Grand Kru County.

The mission included a meeting with the Grand Kru County Health Team, led by the County Health Officer, Dr Craig. During the meeting, Dr Craig expressed appreciation for the continued technical and operational support provided to improve health outcomes in the county. The visit also included stops at Barclayville Health Center and the Ma Minnie Maternity Waiting Home in Trehn Health District.

The visit provided an opportunity to better understand local health priorities, service delivery challenges, and preparedness needs within the broader context of health system strengthening and ongoing Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD) preparedness efforts.

At the Ma Minnie Maternity Waiting Home, discussions highlighted the important role maternity waiting homes play in helping pregnant women from remote communities access skilled care before delivery, contributing to improved maternal and newborn health outcomes.

WHO Representative to Liberia, Dr Olushayo Olu, visited the UN Hub in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, where he met with United Nations personnel supporting programmes and operations across the county.

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss ongoing efforts, strengthen collaboration, and highlight the importance of the One UN approach in supporting communities and county priorities.

Dr Olu also shared an update on ongoing Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD) preparedness efforts and measures being implemented to strengthen readiness in Liberia.

WHO Representative to Liberia, Dr. Olushayo Olu, joined NPHIL Interim Director-General, Dr. Sia Wata Camanor, and Dr. Varough Deyde of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on a mission to Nimba County to assess ongoing Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD) preparedness efforts.

The delegation met with Nimba County Health Officer, Dr Ponnie Robertlee Dolo, and the County Health Team at the Nimba County Health System Head Office before visiting the Liberia Immigration Service in Ganta and the Liberia–Guinea border.

The discussions provided an opportunity to hear directly from frontline personnel and local authorities about ongoing preparedness efforts and priority areas for strengthening readiness.

The visit reaffirmed the importance of strong collaboration in strengthening preparedness and readiness for BVD and other public health threats.

During a recent mission to Grand Cape Mount County, WHO Liberia Representative, Dr. Olushayo Olu, supported ongoing reactive yellow fever vaccination campaign activities and monitored primary health care service delivery in the county.

As part of the visit, The WR - Dr. Olu also paid a courtesy visit to the Bo Waterside Border Post's Port Health desk, to assess the broader health system context and observe ongoing readiness, preparedness activities for early detection and response to potential Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD) cases.

He encouraged immigration officers and health workers to remain vigilant in the screening of travelers amid the Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD) situation in East Africa.

The CelebrateLAB West Africa Conference 2026 and Laboratory Professional Annual Meeting opened in Monrovia, Liberia, bringing together laboratory professionals, scientists, researchers, development partners, academia, young professionals and public health stakeholders from across the region to strengthen collaboration and advance inclusive laboratory systems in Africa.

Held under the theme “One Voice: Advancing Collaborative and Inclusive Laboratory Systems,” the conference is fostering dialogue on laboratory science, diagnostics, innovation, workforce development, research and regional collaboration.

Delivering opening remarks during the conference, WHO Representative to Liberia Dr Olushayo Olu emphasized that strong laboratory systems are no longer optional, but essential as the backbone of resilient health systems.

He further noted that without strong laboratory systems, health systems cannot respond effectively to emerging and re-emerging health threats across Africa. Referencing the ongoing Bundibugyo Virus Disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, Dr Olu highlighted the critical role laboratories continue to play in disease detection, surveillance and preparedness, stressing that laboratories save lives, protect communities and strengthen national and regional preparedness.

He also encouraged participants to focus discussions on practical, home-grown and context-specific solutions for Africa across policy and strategy, workforce development, research and innovation, technology and digital transformation, young scientists and partnerships.

WHO Liberia joined the Minister of Health and the Interim Director of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), along with the U.S. CDC and Africa CDC, in a high-level meeting with H.E. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. on Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease (BVD) preparedness efforts in Liberia.

Discussions focused on briefing the President on the country’s preparedness and readiness status for BVD. Priority preparedness measures include strengthening surveillance systems and Point of Entry (POE) screening, enhancing rapid response readiness, improving laboratory capacity, and intensifying risk communication activities nationwide.

WHO remains committed to supporting the Government of Liberia through close collaboration with national authorities and partners to strengthen preparedness and emergency response systems.
