As part of our World Sight Day activities, the Samaritan Mission team conducted an eye screening exercise at Gabriel Kpolleh Memorial High School. Both students and teachers were screened during the event.

We are pleased to share that several participants who had difficulty seeing clearly, especially when viewing the blackboard, received corrective (negative) glasses. Many expressed joy and relief after discovering that their vision problems could be easily corrected. Some students even shared that their poor academic performance had been due to uncorrected vision issues, which they were previously too shy to report to parents or teachers.

This exercise not only improved their sight but also boosted their confidence and enthusiasm for learning.

Today we will answer this constant question: False Eyelashes good or bad? Please read kindly!

Artificial eyelashes, whether they are eyelash extensions or false lashes, can have varying impacts on individuals with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) and other forms of dry eye disease. Here's how they can influence symptoms and overall eye health:

Impact on Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD):

1. Mechanical Irritation: Artificial eyelashes can cause mechanical irritation to the eyelids and lashes. This irritation can exacerbate existing symptoms of MGD, such as itching, soreness, and a foreign body sensation.

2. Blockage of Gland Openings: Eyelashes serve as an important natural barrier, helping to keep the eyes moist. Artificial eyelashes may obstruct the openings of the meibomian glands, which could hinder the normal secretion of meibum (the oily layer of tears), further aggravating dryness and discomfort.

3. Adhesives and Allergens or glue : The adhesives used to apply artificial lashes may contain chemicals that can provoke allergic reactions or sensitivity, leading to symptoms like redness and swelling of the eyelids. These reactions can be more pronounced in individuals with MGD, as their eyelid tissues are already compromised.

4. Risk of Infection : The presence of artificial eyelashes can create a breeding ground for bacteria if not properly maintained, leading to increased risk of styes or chalazions. Such recurrent issues can further irritate the eyelids and the eye surface.

5. Impact on Tear Film Stability: The application of artificial eyelashes may affect tear film dynamics, potentially worsening blurry vision and overall comfort.

What can I do: Treatments can include warm compresses, eyelid massage, and prescribed medications to improve gland function.

How to Reduce Allergy

The itchy, watery eyes can make even the simplest of tasks feel unbearable. Whether it’s seasonal pollen or pet dander, these pesky allergens can really put a damper on our daily activities.
Common allergens that trigger eye issues include pollen from trees and flowers, mold spores, pet dander, and dust mites. Identifying your specific triggers is the first step towards relief. Here are some methods that I’ve found helpful:

1. Eye Drops: Over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops are a lifesaver. They can provide quick relief from itching and redness.

2. Sunglasses: Wearing sunglasses outdoors can shield your eyes from airborne allergens.

3. Cold Compress: Applying a cold cloth over your eyes for a few minutes can reduce inflammation and soothe irritation.

4. Keep It Clean: Regularly wash your bedding, curtains, and any surfaces that may collect dust or pet hair. A clean environment can significantly reduce your exposure to allergens.

5. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps maintain moisture in your eyes can help flush out irritants.
