LINA Workers Petition Legislature Over Unused Budget, Collapsed Website
Monrovia, December 11, 2025 — Concerned employees of the Liberia News Agency (LINA) have petitioned the National Legislature, raising alarms over the agency’s near collapse despite more than US$700,000 allocated to it in the 2024 and 2025 national budgets.
The workers say the funds have had no visible impact, leaving LINA without a functional website for nearly two years, short of equipment, lacking training, and struggling to carry out basic news-gathering duties. They describe LINA as “the only news agency in Africa without a working website.”
The petition calls for:
Clarification on the status of the FY2024–2025 budget allocations
Immediate restoration of the agency’s website
Operational support for logistics, equipment, and staff welfare
A GAC audit of how the allocated funds were managed by the Ministry of Information
The workers also caution against remarks by Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah that they believe unfairly paint LINA staff as political collaborators of the past regime, stressing that they are civil servants carrying out their mandate.
They are appealing to lawmakers to help determine what happened to nearly US$1 million intended for LINA and to restore the agency’s functionality.
