The Truth Shall Be Revealed

For about 13 years now, I have been advocating against drug abuse. Students of Ganta United Methodist High School will remember my work in 2013 during the administration of Mr. Roger S. Y. Domah. That year, we created health clubs in six high schools in Ganta, with GUMS as our base.

Today, the fight against drugs in Ganta continues, but with a stronger strategy. Because so many young people were falling into drug use, we launched the OMEHPRO Behavioral Health Center in 2022. The center is still under construction in Ganta, but it will soon be a place of healing for our brothers and sisters who are suffering from addiction.

As their pain grows, so does our urgency. We are pushing to complete the center soon so we can save lives and give hope.

But I’ll be honest - the fight is getting harder. News of a recent co***ne seizure worth about $19 million shows how deep this crisis is. As someone who has fought drugs for over a decade, this is painful to watch.

I use this platform to call on our government: Bring to justice everyone involved in this drug case. Drugs have no friends. If we stay silent, we allow this nightmare to destroy the future of our children.

Drug destroys. Recovery restores. Keep following the OMEHPRO Movement.

Drug Fuels Violence: Evidence From My Village Experience

In my professional life as an Addiction Professional, I have often heard that one of the consequences of drug abuse is violence. Violence takes many shapes and forms. When people use drugs, including alcohol, they often get involved in violent acts.

Right before my own eyes, I witnessed two incidents that prove this truth.

The first fight was between two men throwing blows. It started as a small argument under a _palava hut_ in the village, where men usually gather for evening drinks. As they became more intoxicated, the argument escalated. Before I knew it, an elderly man joined the fight with the younger guy. The fight lasted about five minutes until the elderly man was thrown to the ground. The only thing I heard him say was, “My foot slipped, that’s why I fell down.” Hmm… the power of liquor.

The second scenario happened on a Saturday morning. I saw a heavily intoxicated woman aggressively beating on a man believed to be her boyfriend. Both of them were drunk and started arguing over something small. Before I could appeal to her to stop, the woman was hitting the man. To be fair, the man was not very aggressive, though he did slap her once. Later, I joined other villagers and we separated them. The fight stopped. Right there, I became a peace maker, like an _Ecomo man_.

These two experiences taught me a hard lesson: drugs, including alcohol, fuel violence. Every day on street corners, we see people drinking alcohol as if it were juice or cold water. I wonder if they know alcohol is a chemical that damages health and triggers serious problems.

The dangers of alcohol intoxication are real:
1. Short-term risks: Impaired judgment. Lowered inhibitions lead to poor decisions, accidents, falls, and violence.
2. Alcohol poisoning: Rapid drinking shuts down automatic brain functions like the gag reflex. This can cause coma or fatal choking.
3. Long-term damage: Heavy drinking damages vital organs, increases risk of multiple cancers, and leads to irreversible conditions like Alcohol Use Disorder, AUD.

The dangers of alcohol are numerous, and I saw them for myself in the village. From my village experience and what I’ve learned about alcohol intoxication, I advise young people to be careful. Remember: alcohol is a slow poison that damages one’s health.

It was truly an honor to represent the Mental Health Unit, Ministry of Health at the launch of the Pathway to Education and Career Program by Mental Crisis Foundation Incorporated.

I spoke with the audience on the topic: “The Importance of Community Initiatives in Addressing Liberia’s Drug Crisis.” I emphasized that youth must say no to drugs, as substance use has the power to destroy their future. The safest path is to stay connected to learning opportunities that equip and guide them away from drug use.

I extend my sincere appreciation to the organization for the opportunity to address the youth and other participants.

We keep speaking about mental health problems and drug misuse everywhere hoping that change will come some day.
