Today, 26 August 2026, ForumCiv Liberiaโ€™s Country Manager, Asa D. Chon, joined other civil society actors working across different sectors in Liberia for the CSO Roadmap Validation Workshop organized by the Delegation of the European Union in Liberia. The EU Ambassador to Liberia, H.E. Nona Deprez, participated virtually.

The workshop provided an important platform to review and validate the CSO Roadmap, ensuring that it reflects the priorities, needs and aspirations of Liberiaโ€™s civil society sector. The Roadmap will serve as a shared framework for strengthening coordination, collaboration, participation and the overall effectiveness of Civil Society Organisations in Liberia.

ForumCiv welcomes this important step towards building a stronger, more coordinated, inclusive and resilient civil society sector that can contribute meaningfully to Liberiaโ€™s development.

We appreciate the European Unionโ€™s support for a stronger and more inclusive civil society in Liberia.

On August 15, 2024, ForumCiv Liberia and the National Alliance for Women's Land Rights (NAWoLAR) met with Senate President Pro-Tempore, Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County to formally notify her of the 2026 Rural Womenโ€™s Land Rights Conference (RWLRC) and discuss its future and sustainability. The event is slated for October in Buchanan.

Launched by ForumCiv Liberia in 2020, the RWLRC is a national platform for assessing progress and challenges affecting rural womenโ€™s land tenure rights. It convenes rural women, donors, government ministries and agencies, private-sector actors, civil society and academia to amplify womenโ€™s experiences, identify policy and service gaps, and advance coordinated solutions.

The conference envisions a Liberia where rural women enjoy secure and equitable land rights. Its mission is to elevate their voices, strengthen accountability and mobilize collective action toward policies, services and investments that protect their land and property rights.

During the meeting, ForumCiv Liberia Country Manager Asa David Chon emphasized the importance of legislative and institutional support for sustaining the conference. Loretta Pope-Kai, Executive Director of Sustained Earth and Equity Defenders (SEED), who represented NAWoLAR, called for stronger national action on rural womenโ€™s land rights.

Sen. Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence welcomed the initiative and committed to supporting efforts to strengthen the conference and advance rural womenโ€™s land ownership and tenure rights across Liberia.

A partnership ends, but its legacy lives on.

As Sweden concludes its bilateral development cooperation with Liberia on August 31, 2026, ForumCiv extends its heartfelt appreciation for Swedenโ€™s transformative support.

Since 2018, Swedenโ€™s partnership with ForumCiv in Liberia has strengthened civil society organizations in rural counties, enhanced community cohesion, and advanced land tenure rights for rural women and customary communities. This support also helped establish the Rural Women Land Rights Conference (RWLRC), now a national platform for amplifying rural womenโ€™s voices and advancing their land rights. ForumCiv and its partners remain committed to sustaining this important platform beyond 2026.

Thank you, Sweden, for investing in stronger communities, inclusive institutions, and a more rights-based Liberia.

๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช
After nearly two decades of development cooperation, Swedenโ€™s bilateral support to Liberia is coming to an end on August 31 2026. Since 2008, Sweden has contributed to Liberiaโ€™s journey from a post-conflict country to a stronger democracy, with greater accountability, strengthened rights, and improved prospects for women, girls, and local communities.

Over the years, Sweden has supported peaceful elections, strengthened land rights, contributed to the fight against corruption, improved access to education and healthcare through road construction, advanced gender equality and efforts to end female ge***al mutilation (FGM), strengthened private sector development, and promoted the sustainable management of natural resources.

โ€œIt is our hope that these results will be sustained and that Swedenโ€™s long-standing partnership with Liberia will have contributed to something greater than singular projects โ€“ communities with stronger institutions, greater opportunities for their citizens, and better conditions to shape their own future,โ€ says Kerstin Jonsson Cissรฉ, Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia.

After the closure, Sweden will continue to contribute to important efforts in Liberia through other channels, such as the EU, civil society partnerships, and core support to multilateral organizations.

Karzah Section Secures Customary Land Deed

Karzah Section in Voinjama, Lofa County has officially secured legal ownership of more than 40,000 hectares of customary land.

This historic achievement was made possible under the ''Building Capacity for Sustainable Land Ownership and Inclusive Development Project'' funded by the Embassy of Ireland in Liberia and led by our partner, Social Empowerment thorough Learning Liberia - SELL Inc. The project seeks to strengthen SELLโ€™s capacity while advancing secure land-tenure rights, environmental protection and womenโ€™s empowerment.

SELL National Coordinator Thomas Duana described the deed as recognition of Karzah Sectionโ€™s rightful ownership and a major step toward secure land tenureโ€”the foundation for lasting social and economic growth.

Presenting the deed, Liberia Land Authority's Lofa County Land Administrator William Zayzay praised the communityโ€™s commitment throughout the land-formalization process. He reminded residents that the deed legally protects their customary land as a shared community asset that must be safeguardedโ€”not sold.

For his part, ForumCiv Liberia Country Manager Asa D. Chon applauded Irish Aid for funding the initiative and for its continued commitment to empowering rights-holders. He reaffirmed ForumCivโ€™s commitment to ensuring that communities have the knowledge, rights and resources to manage their land responsibly and inclusively.

Madam Korpo Kemah, who chairs the local land governance structure, indicated that the achievement sends a powerful message that women are not mere beneficiaries of land reformโ€”they are leaders shaping how community land and natural resources are governed. โ€œWe are proud to be securing the future of our children,โ€ Madam Kemah said.

This deed is more than a legal document. It gives the people of Karzah Section greater power to shape their development, protect their environment and contribute to safeguarding the wider Wologizi landscape for generations to come. Secure land. Empowered women. Protected forests. A stronger future.
