Elections are over, but we all know that there is still tension and division in some communities over the results. To address this, FIND is planning to hold a panel discussion in Palala on Monday, December 11, 2023. At this event, we intend to bring community leaders and the public together to resolve some of the issues – please join us if you have the opportunity!

On Thursday, September 21, 2023, FIND celebrated the International Day of Peace under the theme "Actions for Peace: Taking action to ensure peaceful Elections in Liberia on October 10, 2023". The event, which was held at the Gbarnga Administrative Building, brought together almost 200 participants from civil society, schools, youth groups, political parties and government agencies.
The indoor program included a keynote speech by Dr. Amanzo Charles Ihedioha, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Cuttington University, followed by an interactive discussion around the topic “what actions can we all take to ensure peaceful elections?” Other questions that were discussed by the participants were how to prevent hate speech and intimidation during the campaign period leading up to election day. After the very lively discussion, participants were encouraged to visit the “market place”, where they could interact further with FIND staff and take some stickers with messages that promote peaceful behavior during the election, which are intended to be used to raise more awareness in the final weeks of the campaign.
The program concluded with the launch of FIND’s 20th Anniversary. Executive Director, Aaron Juakollie, kicked-off a fundraising campaign in support of FIND’s activities.
We would like to thank all the participants and partners who contributed to making the International Day of Peace celebration a success!

After our planning workshop, the FIND team took a trip to Kpatawee Waterfalls, where we were able to relax a bit after a year of intense work and to enjoy each other’s company outside of the office.

On this occasion, the Executive Director awarded certificates to three trainees who have been learning on-the-job at FIND since July 2021. Furthermore, Edith B. N. Willie (one of the graduating Trainees and now a Project Assistant) was presented with an award for “Staff of the Year” for her outstanding work.

If you would also like to volunteer with FIND, contact the Team Leader, Aaron G. V. Juakollie to discuss how you can become involved in promoting human rights and justice in Liberia (see contacts on our page).

We ended last year with an Annual Planning Workshop, involving all of our staff from Gbarnga and volunteers from B**g Mines, Lofa, Nimba and Grand Gedeh, to reflect on successes and challenges in 2022, and to prepare ourselves for 2023.

There is a lot in the pipeline – so make sure to follow our page for more posts about our activities throughout the year!

Another activity we conducted back in December was the commemoration of Human Rights Day.

Every year on December 10th, the world celebrates Human Rights Day, the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The theme for 2022 was “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All.” FIND celebrated this day with the citizens of Kpolokpai Town to create awareness for basic human rights. The message that we wanted to convey was that human rights are universal – meaning that human rights are the same for all people everywhere regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, or economic background.

However, a person’s ability to enjoy their human rights depends on other people respecting those rights. This means that human rights also involve responsibility and duties towards other people and the community. Individuals have a responsibility to ensure that they exercise their rights with consideration for the rights of others, and governments have a particular responsibility to ensure that people are able to enjoy their rights, as enshrined in the constitution.

The workshop was very interactive. Participants were asked to reflect on the question: “which rights do you know?” and the resulting discussion was very lively.

At the beginning of December 2022, we conducted a Case Flow Management workshop with the B**g Justice and Security Sector. Case Flow Management is a platform to strengthen communication and coordination among Justice and Security actors. The overall objective is to ensure fair procedure in line with international human rights and national standards for both complainants and defendants, and to reduce pro-longed pre-trial detention at the Gbarnga Central Prison.

The workshop provided an opportunity for justice and security sector actors to address shortcomings within the system and to develop action points on how to improve communication between the courts (judges, prosecution, public defense and clerks of the circuit court and the nine magisterial courts), as well as between police units, prison administration of the Gbarnga Central Prison and probation officers.

The workshop was a great success, and as a result, the participants decided to hold quarterly coordination meetings from now on, which will be facilitated by FIND.

Better late than never... the FIND team wishes you all a Happy New Year! Although 2023 is already in full swing, we still wanted to share some news about a few activities that we conducted in December 2022 – we just haven’t gotten around to it until now. So, please enjoy the (belated) update 🙃
