PRESS STATEMENT
GBARNGA CITY, B**G COUNTY
REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA

MAY 8, 2026
Liberia Women and Children Aid Initiative (L-WOCAI) strongly condemns the brutal assault and public humiliation recently carried out against a young woman in the Red Light commercial district- Paynesville, Montserrado County by a group of men who violently attacked her because of her appearance and alleged dressing style.

No woman deserves to be stripped, beaten, disgraced, or abused in public under the excuse of culture, morality, or community discipline. Violence against women is never acceptable, and mob attacks against women are criminal acts that violate human dignity, freedom, and basic human rights.

As an organization committed to protecting the rights, welfare, and safety of women and children across Liberia, L-WOCAI is deeply alarmed by the increasing trend of violence, harassment, and public shaming directed at women and girls. Such actions create fear, insecurity, and trauma, especially for young women who should be able to move freely without intimidation or abuse.

We call on the Liberia National Police and all relevant authorities to conduct a swift investigation, ensure the arrest of all perpetrators involved, and guarantee that justice is served without delay. Accountability is important to prevent future acts of violence against women and girls.

L-WOCAI further urges community leaders, parents, youth groups, religious institutions, and civil society actors to speak with one voice against violence and harmful social behaviors that undermine the dignity and safety of women.

Liberia cannot build a peaceful and progressive society while women continue to face humiliation, violence, and public attacks. Respect for women’s rights, bodily integrity, and human dignity must remain a national priority.

We stand in solidarity with the victim and all survivors of gender-based violence.

Liberia Women and Children Aid Initiative Participates in Integrity Watch Liberia Project Launch

Liberia Women and Children Aid Initiative (L-WOCAI) was among 40 civil society organizations selected from B**g, Nimba, Bomi, and Gbarpolu Counties to participate in the official launch of a new project by Integrity Watch Liberia (IWL) in Gompa City, Nimba County.

The project, titled “Strengthening Inclusive Participation, Human Rights Protection, and Corporate Accountability in Liberia’s Forestry and Extractive Sectors,” is a 24-month initiative (January 2026 – December 2027) funded by the European Union.

Project Focus and Objectives
The initiative supports the implementation of Liberia’s National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAPBHR). Its overall objective is to strengthen human rights protection and corporate accountability in Liberia’s forestry and extractive sectors through the effective application of national and international standards.

Capacity Assessment and CSO Strengthening
As part of the project’s preparatory phase, Integrity Watch Liberia conducted an institutional capacity assessment of participating CSOs, and findings were validated at the launch. This assessment aimed to:
--Develop an evidence-based understanding of CSO capacity in forestry and extractive governance
--Identify structural, technical, and operational gaps
--Inform realistic program design and tailored capacity-building support
--Ensure CSO engagement aligns with EU risk management, safeguarding, and results-based management standards.

This diagnostic process serves as a foundation for building stronger, more effective civil society participation in governance and accountability efforts.

L-WOCAI expresses sincere gratitude to Integrity Watch Liberia for its selection and commitment to strengthening the capacities of civil society organizations, community leaders, government institutions, and private sector actors.

The organization also extends heartfelt appreciation to the European Union for funding this important initiative, which contributes to strengthening Liberia’s governance systems and promoting democratic accountability, transparency, human rights protection, and peaceful coexistence.

Liberia Women and Children Aid Initiative (L-WOCAI) is participating in the ongoing CSOs Transitional Justice Conference themed “Call to Action on Transitional Justice for Liberia Now!” at EJS Ministerial Complex in Monrovia.

The opening address by Cllr. Tiawan S. Gongloe emphasized the urgent need for continued transitional justice processes, stressing that Liberia needs closure, healing, and reconciliation now.

Key presentations included lessons from the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone, highlighting that prosecutions focused on those bearing the greatest responsibility. Mrs. Elise Keppler of the Global Justice Center shared international experiences on building trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and gender-sensitive justice frameworks, alongside contributions from Dr. Aaron Weah of the Ducor Institute.

A panel discussion explored managing expectations and building trust in the transitional justice process, followed by breakout sessions that developed key messages and recommendations on protection, collaboration, and justice. Delegates unanimously called for urgent action.

L-WOCAI remains committed to working with partners to advance justice and protection for women and children, especially those directly affected by Liberia’s civil war.
