Expanding the Frontier: Zortarpa Leadership Proposes Massive Community Forest Reserve Near the ENNR

In a significant move toward large-scale community stewardship, the Zortarpa town leadership, represented by Mr. Barry Gono, has formally expressed interest in legally reserving a vast tract of community land for conservation. While the initial estimate stands at 500+ hectares, leadership noted during the launch that the actual forest area could be significantly larger once officially measured.

Mr. Gono clarified that while this land is situated in close proximity to the East Nimba Nature Reserve (ENNR), it remains distinct community land, independent of the formal reserve boundaries. By seeking to protect this area, the leadership is aiming to create a vital ecological corridor and a sustainable resource for future generations. Mr. Gono specifically called upon the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) and international partners to provide the technical and legal framework necessary to aid in the formal measurement and reservation process.
The FDA Region IV office and the ENNR Co-Management Committee welcomed the proposal, recognizing that such grassroots initiatives are essential for landscape-level conservation. The prospect of a community-managed forest of this scale would significantly enhance the protection of Nimba’s biodiversity while ensuring the community retains sovereign rights over their natural heritage.

Youth Glow is committed to supporting this ambitious transition. By facilitating the technical dialogue between the Zortarpa leadership and the FDA, we aim to ensure this proposal moves from a vision to a legally protected reality. This initiative proves that community-led conservation is the most powerful tool for protecting Liberia's forests and securing a green legacy for our youth.

Strategic Oversight: FDA Region IV Mandates Transparency and Accountability at ENNR Project Launch

In a powerful endorsement of local conservation efforts, the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) Regional Office (Region IV) represented by Roger Akin Tahn took a leading role in today’s official launch of the Sustainable Land Conservation Project in Zortarpa and Yekepa Camp #4. The FDA’s presence underscored the project's critical importance in protecting the East Nimba Nature Reserve (ENNR) and signaled a high-level commitment to national conservation standards.

During the proceedings, the FDA Regional representative proxy issued a clear and decisive mandate for the success of the intervention, stating: "We pledge our full support to this project and we encourage the community and Youth Glow to be accountable and transparent all through the intervention to ensure maximum project impact across these communities." This call for integrity serves as the guiding principle for the partnership between Youth Glow and the national forestry sector.

Beyond the formal endorsement, the FDA participated in an interactive knowledge-sharing session. In the accompanying video, the Regional Office shares vital lessons and experiences regarding the management of the ENNR, emphasizing the need for community-led vigilance and the legal frameworks that govern sustainable land use in the buffer zones. Their insights provided the beneficiaries with a deeper understanding of why Agroecology and Apiculture are being prioritized as the primary tools for forest preservation.

By aligning with the FDA’s mandate for transparency, Youth Glow is ensuring that every component of the project—from the Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) to the 5-hectare farm demarcations—operates with the highest level of institutional oversight. This collaboration ensures that the project remains not only a win for community livelihoods but a long-term victory for Liberia’s biodiversity.

Mobilizing for the ENNR: Youth Glow and Partners Launch Integrated Conservation Initiative in Nimba

In a landmark demonstration of institutional synergy and community resolve, Youth Glow, in collaboration with UNDP Liberia and the Small Grant Programme, officially launched the Sustainable Land Conservation Project today across the Zortarpa and Yekepa Camp #4 landscapes. The back-to-back inception meetings signaled a unified commitment to preserving the ecological integrity of the East Nimba Nature Reserve (ENNR) while simultaneously catalyzing economic resilience for its fringe communities.

This high-impact launch was characterized by an unprecedented level of stakeholder alignment, featuring high-level representation from the FDA Region IV Regional Office and the ENNR Co-Management Committee (CMC). During the session, the FDA Regional Office emphasized the weight of this partnership, stating, "We pledge our full support to this project, but we also charge Youth Glow and the community to remain accountable and transparent through every stage of this intervention to ensure we achieve maximum impact for our forests and our people."

Local governance also took center stage, with District Commissioners and Town Chiefs providing a dual layer of national oversight and local administrative endorsement. The local leadership echoed this sentiment of cooperation, noting, "This project is a welcome development for our districts; we stand ready to provide the administrative backing needed to ensure our land and our future are protected."

To address site-specific pressures, the project is deploying tailored technical interventions, including a 5-hectare agroecology model and VSLA in Zortarpa to restore degraded lands, and an apiculture and VSLA program in Yekepa Camp #4 to transform forest protection into a tangible economic asset. By diversifying livelihoods, the initiative seeks to create a sustainable buffer for the reserve while empowering local households through financial literacy and savings models.

The most vital outcome of the day was the resounding pledge of support from women and youth leaders who will serve as the primary drivers of this transition. Representing the energy on the ground, a community spokesperson declared, "We have seen the plan and we have seen the commitment; we can't wait to get started and take ownership of these new opportunities."

Youth Glow remains committed to the mandate of transparency, ensuring that this intervention serves as a professional blueprint for high-impact, community-led conservation in Liberia. Together with our partners, we are not just protecting a forest; we are securing the future of the people who call it home.

📢 Big News: Youth Glow Selected as Key Partner for EU-Funded Project in Nimba!

We are thrilled to announce that Youth Glow has been officially selected as one of the 10 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from Nimba County to support the implementation of a transformative new project!

On February 21, 2026, in Gompa City, we joined Integrity Watch Liberia (IWL) and the European Union for the launch of: “Strengthening Inclusive Participation, Human Rights Protection and Corporate Accountability in Liberia’s Forestry and Extractive Sectors.”

🛠️ Our Role in the Field
As a selected local partner, Youth Glow will be on the front lines, ensuring that the project’s goals translate into real action across Nimba County.

Our focus remains clear:

1. Monitoring Corporate Conduct: Ensuring forestry and mining concessions honor their obligations to our communities.

2. Empowering Youth Voices: Bridging the gap between young people and high-level governance systems.

3. Human Rights Advocacy: Supporting the National Action Plan to ensure local dignity is never sacrificed for profit.

🤝 A Seat at the Table
This launch wasn’t just a ceremony—it was a high-level validation of the gaps we need to close. Alongside the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the FDA, and LEITI, Youth Glow and 10 other Civil society organizations in Nimba are ready to provide the technical oversight and digital monitoring needed to make this project a success.

We are honored to represent the youth of Nimba in this multi-stakeholder effort. Together, we are ensuring that Liberia’s natural resources deliver measurable development and tangible protection for everyone.

Protecting the East Nimba Nature Reserve through Sustainable Innovation! 🌳🍯

Today marked an important milestone for the "Sustainable Land Conservation Project" under the UNDP/GEF "Small Grant Program"!

Our team conducted a site visit to Zortarpa to inspect 5 hectares of farmland across three sites. This land will serve as the foundation for our mission to reduce human pressure on the East Nimba Nature Reserve.

Through our partnership with UNDP Liberia, we are empowering two local communities by replacing high-impact practices with a three-pillar approach:

🐝 Apiculture (Beekeeping): Providing alternative livelihoods that thrive in harmony with the forest.

🌱 Agroecology: Implementing climate-smart fruit and vegetable production on our new 5-hectare site to ensure food security without land degradation.

💰 Entrepreneurship (VSLA): Strengthening community resilience through Village Savings and Loan Associations to fund local green businesses.

By creating these economic buffers, we are ensuring that the beauty and biodiversity of the East Nimba Nature Reserve are preserved for generations to come.

A special thanks to the Zortarpa community for their leadership in this conservation journey! 🇱🇷✨

We are proud to announce our partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Liberia and the Global Environment Facility – Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP) to implement a six-month conservation and sustainable livelihoods initiative in two communities within the East Nimba Nature Reserve landscape.

Today marked an important first step as the Youth Glow team conducted stakeholder courtesy meetings in Zortarpa and Yekepa Camp #4. These engagements focused on formally introducing the project, listening to community perspectives, and strengthening collaboration with local leaders, women, and youth representatives.

The initiative will support communities to adopt environmentally responsible farming practices, explore alternative livelihoods such as beekeeping, strengthen financial resilience, and deepen awareness of conservation regulations — all while promoting inclusive participation and local ownership.

We are encouraged by the warm reception, constructive dialogue, and strong commitment demonstrated by community stakeholders. Their partnership is central to ensuring the project delivers lasting environmental protection alongside tangible livelihood benefits.

We look forward to working closely with residents, traditional leaders, and local partners over the coming months to advance conservation outcomes and strengthen resilience for people living within the ENNR landscape.

Success Story: Persons with Disabilities Driving Change in Sanniquellie

In Sanniquellie, Nimba County, members of the Nimba Disable Community (NDC) are rewriting their own story of empowerment and resilience. Through Youth Glow’s Business & Entrepreneurship Training, implemented under the Economic Empowerment Pillar of the Empower Liberia Program (ELP), 35 persons with disabilities were recruited in October 2024 to strengthen their livelihoods and business skills.

On October 24, 2025, 33 of the trained participants successfully completed their loan share-out exercise, distributing a total of LRD 496,735, which included LRD 36,925 generated as interest from small loans provided to group members. Within just six months of receiving seed capital, 70% (about 25 participants) had already started their own micro businesses, ranging from petty trading to service-based ventures — creating income, dignity, and independence for themselves and their families.

This initiative was made possible through funding from FAO Liberia, under the Peace Dividends Project, supported by the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund (UNPBF).

Building on this success, the Nimba Disable Community (NDC) has already launched a new cycle, recruiting additional members to expand opportunities for more persons with disabilities in Nimba County. Their determination stands as a testament to how inclusive economic empowerment can transform lives and strengthen peace and development at the community level.

🌟 Your Voice, Steve’s Next Step! 🌟

On Sept 29, 2025, Steve Nyemeinway Quoi reached out to his community with an important question: Should his next chapter be in Entrepreneurship or Public Service? This was more than just a poll — it was an invitation for young people to shape a decision that could impact many lives.

The response was inspiring! Out of 29 participants, a powerful 23 (79%) chose Entrepreneurship, while 6 (21%) leaned toward Public Service. This overwhelming result highlights the confidence the community has in the power of innovation, creativity, and enterprise as a driving force for Liberia’s development.
