Empowering Voices: Justice on Wheels in Compound/Lakayta, Margibi County

Our mission to strengthen the rule of law extends beyond the courtroom and into the heart of our communities. Yesterday, our Justice on Wheels team comprising volunteer lawyers held a vital legal awareness session with women of the Compound/Lakayta Community along the B**g Mines Road.

We believe that true justice begins with knowledge. By engaging directly with women group in this community, we are working to ensure that every citizen understands their basic legal rights and responsibilities. These discussions provide a critical space to address personal and community legal challenges, fostering a safer and more informed society for everyone.

We thank the women of Compound/Lakayta for their active participation and insightful questions. Together, we are building a foundation of legal literacy that empowers communities to stand firm for their rights.

Continuing the Momentum: More Success for Justice on Wheels!

Following yesterday’s milestone in Kakata, our Justice on Wheels team has kept the momentum going today, June 24, 2026, at the Bondiway Prison Compound. We are pleased to report that 13 additional individuals have been granted their freedom from pre-trial detention in Margibi County.

Through collaborative fast-track trials conducted at the facility, 9 defendants had their cases heard by the RIA Magistrate's Court, while 4 pre-trial defendants were processed by the Bondiway Magistrate's Court. Following the proceedings, Magistrates Clarence N. Weah and Cecelia Rogers emphasized the importance of civic responsibility, urging the released individuals to reintegrate positively into their communities and uphold the law.

We are committed to making the rule of law a practical reality for our most vulnerable citizens. Our approach focuses on two core pillars: direct community legal education, which empowers citizens with the knowledge to understand and exercise their legal rights, and targeted litigation, through which we take decisive legal action to combat the issue of prolonged pre-trial detention. By integrating these strategies, we are actively dismantling barriers to justice across Margibi County. Our mission remains clear: to ensure that the rights of every citizen are protected and that justice is never delayed.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our volunteer lawyers, Attys. Al Varney Rogers and Alpha Daffae Senkpeni, for their commitment and sacrifice. We are also proud to continue this vital work alongside our dedicated partners in the Judiciary and at the Ministry of Justice. We extend our gratitude to the Embassy of Sweden and Naymote for their continued support in this mission to strengthen the rule of law across Liberia.

Justice on Wheels: Sawabenu’s Week in Margibi County

On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, our Justice on Wheels Initiative achieved a significant milestone in Margibi County, further strengthening the vital link between the law and our communities.

Through a collaborative effort involving our volunteer lawyers, the Public Defender, the City Solicitor, and the Kakata City Court, we conducted a successful fast-track trial at the prison facility. As a result, 21 male pre-trial detainees were released from the Kakata Central Prison. These individuals had been held for months for minor offenses without trial.
This initiative marks a crucial stand against the issue of prolonged pre-trial detention and reaffirms our steadfast commitment to upholding citizens’ rights and ensuring justice is accessible to all.

Our team is actively conducting outreach within Cotton Tree, Lackey Town, and B**g Mines Road to educate citizens regarding their rights, responsibilities, and protections under the criminal justice system, and covering other critical legal matters including search and seizure procedures, child support, and women’s inheritance rights. During our recent engagement at the Cotton Tree Hatai Center, the participants demonstrated a high level of interest in specific aspects of the justice system. The discussion focused heavily on the mechanics of criminal investigations and how to address instances of unprofessional police conduct. Additionally, attendees expressed a strong need for information regarding the legal process for making counter-claims following a not-guilty verdict in r**e trials.

These interventions are guided by Rule 9 of the Magistrate and Traffic Court, which requires cases to be resolved within 30 days. With some detainees held far longer, our volunteer lawyers will move for dismissals at Bondiway and RIA Magisterial Courts.

This effort is not a judgment on the merits but a defense of constitutional rights and judicial accountability.
We extend our sincere appreciation to our volunteer lawyers, Attys. Al Varney Rogers and Alpha Daffae Senkpeni, for their tireless commitment and sacrifice in ensuring these constitutional protections were upheld.
