Your help is needed to provide care for more than 60 chimpanzees in Liberia, Africa who were used in invasive experiments for decades by a US-based research organization. In approximately 2006, the chimpanzees--several of whom were captured from the wild to be used in research--were finally retired to a small group of estuary islands near the coast of Liberia. The
se chimpanzees have been through so much already—from the research they endured to civil wars in Liberia that resulted in the death of many of the original 400+ chimpanzees. We (Humane World for Animals Africa formerly called the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International) have taken responsibility for the lifetime care of the chimpanzees. The research organization that used the chimpanzees in research has provided approximately half of the estimated funding needed for the chimps’ care. But, we urgently need your help to make up the difference, which will enable us to provide a high-quality sanctuary for the remaining chimps. Please donate now to help us provide the chimps with the food, water, and care they so critically need! Then, stay tuned to this page for information and updates on the chimpanzees and our progress towards providing them with the high-quality sanctuary care they deserve. Background:
In the 1970’s, a U.S.-based research organization partnered with the Liberian Institute for Biomedical Research to create Vilab II, a laboratory that obtained, bred and used chimpanzees in biomedical research and testing. After enduring decades of invasive experimentation, the chimps were deemed no longer useful for research and retired to small islands near the laboratory in 2006. After the research organization stopped providing financial support for the chimpanzees’ care in 2015, Humane World for Animals Africa (formerly called the Humane Society International) stepped in to provide emergency funding and took on the care of the animals. Two years later, the research organization and Humane World agreed to essentially split the costs of providing lifetime care for the chimpanzees. The research organization provided a lump sum payment after which Humane World agreed to assume responsibility for the chimpanzees’ lifetime care. Humane World for Animals is excited to work with the government of Liberia to give these chimpanzees the high-quality sanctuary care they deserve after all they have been through. We would like to thank the following organizations for their incredible support to help ensure that the chimpanzees received two years of emergency care between 2015 to 2017:
