♟️🌟 GM Chess Seminar Successfully Concluded in Vavuniya 🌟♟️

The Vavuniya District Chess Association (VDCA) proudly and successfully conducted a Grandmaster Chess Seminar on 13.12.2025 at the Conference Hall of the Vavuniya Divisional Secretariat Office.

This seminar marked a historic milestone for chess in Vavuniya, as it was one of the most interactive and engaging chess sessions ever conducted in the district. The program was led by Grandmaster Mikuláš Maník (Slovakia), and all participating players showed exceptional enthusiasm and keen interest throughout the session.

A special highlight of the seminar was the simultaneous chess exhibition, where the Grandmaster played against all participating players at the same time. This rare experience was both inspiring and memorable for the players. Adding to the excitement, the Grandmaster personally signed the chess boards of all participants, creating lasting memories for everyone involved.

It was truly encouraging to see the excitement and motivation among the players, many of whom met a Grandmaster for the first time in Vavuniya. We strongly believe this experience will inspire them to aim higher in their chess journey.

VDCA extends its heartfelt thanks to GM Mikuláš Maník, all participants, parents, and supporters, and also to the Vavuniya Divisional Secretariat for kindly providing the venue and necessary facilities, which greatly contributed to the successful completion of this memorable event.

The World Tamil Chess Federation (WTCF), in collaboration with the Vavuniya District Chess Association (VDCA), proudly hosted the 4th WTCF Ceylon Rapid Chess Open 2025 on 10th August 2025 at Kandhasamy Kovil Mandapam, Vavuniya. The event witnessed the participation of enthusiastic players from across the region, making it a remarkable celebration of chess.

Though the tournament was conducted under an open category, the prize-giving ceremony recognized talent across seven divisions: Open, Under 15 Girls & Boys, Under 13 Girls & Boys, Under 11 Girls & Boys, Best Woman, and Best Woman from the Eastern Province. In total, 34 prestigious prizes were awarded to the winners, acknowledging their skill, dedication, and sportsmanship.

The event brought together players, parents, and chess lovers in a spirited atmosphere, fostering friendship, learning, and healthy competition. We extend heartfelt thanks to the Chief Guest, Government Agent Mr. P.A. Sarathchandra, Special Guests, Additional Government Agent Mr. N. Kamalathasan and Secretary, Kandhasamy Kovil, arbiters, parents, and all participants for making the tournament a grand success.

This tournament stands as another milestone in VDCA’s mission to promote chess culture and nurture future champions in Vavuniya and beyond.

✅ Key Concepts of Performance Rating

🧮 Definition:
Performance rating என்பது ஒரு player தனது tournament result சாதாரணமானதாக (அதாவது எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும்) இருக்கவேண்டுமென்றால் அவருக்கு இருக்கவேண்டிய rating என்பதை குறிக்கும்.

எளிமையாகச் சொன்னால், இது கீழ்க்கண்ட கேள்விக்கு பதிலளிக்கிறது:
“ஒரு player இந்த result-ஐ பெற்றிருந்தால், எந்த rating அந்த performance-ஐ average (expected) ஆக காட்டும்?”

📊 How It's Calculated (Simplified)
ஒரு player, average rating 1600 உள்ள 5 opponents எதிராக விளையாடுகிறார்கள் எனக் கொள்ளுங்கள்:

Player 50% (2.5/5) score செய்தால், அவரது performance rating அந்த opponents' average rating-க்கு சமமாக இருக்கும் → 1600.

Player 50%-ஐ விட அதிகம் score செய்தால், performance rating 1600-ஐ விட உயர்ந்தது ஆகும்.

50%-ஐ விட குறைவாக score செய்தால், அது 1600-ஐ விட குறைவாக இருக்கும்.

🧠 Example:
Opponent Ratings 1580 1600 1610 1620 1600
Player Result Win Draw Win Loss Draw

Average Opponent Rating = 1602

Total Score = 3/5 (60%)

இந்த நிலைமையில், performance rating சுமார் 1640–1650 ஆக இருக்கும், இது அந்த player, 1600-rated player-ஐ விட சிறிது மேம்பட்ட நிலைமைக்கு விளையாடியுள்ளார் என்பதை காட்டுகிறது.

📌 Why Performance Rating Matters
இது ஒரு player, initial FIDE rating-க்கான தகுதியைக் (minimum 1400) பெறுகிறாரா என்பதை தீர்மானிக்கப் பயன்படுகிறது.

Official rating இல்லாத players இடையே comparison செய்ய உதவுகிறது.

இது ஒரு tool ஆக செயல்படுகிறது norm evaluation-க்கு, குறிப்பாக title events (உதா: IM, GM norms) இல்.

✅ FIDE Requirements for Obtaining an Initial Rating

1 March 2024 முதல் செயல்பாட்டில் இருக்கும் FIDE Rating Regulations-ன் படி, ஒரு விளையாட்டு வீரர் தன்னுடைய initial standard (classical) rating ஐ பெறுவதற்காக பின்வரும் நிபந்தனைகளை பூர்த்தி செய்ய வேண்டும்:

🎯 Participation in Rated Games
குறைந்தது 5 gamesஐ, ஏற்கனவே FIDE rating பெற்ற opponents எதிராக விளையாட வேண்டும்.

இந்த games பல tournaments இல், அதிகபட்சமாக 26-month period-இல் விளையாடப்பட்டதாக இருக்கலாம்.

📊 Performance Rating Threshold
Rated opponents எதிராக விளையாடிய games-இல், குறைந்தது 1400 performance ratingஐ பெற வேண்டும்.

⏱️ Time Control Requirements
Games அனைத்தும் standard time controls கீழ் நடத்தப்பட வேண்டும்.

பொதுவாக, ஒவ்வொரு playerக்கும் entire gameக்கு குறைந்தது 60 minutes இருக்க வேண்டும்.

📝 Tournament Registration
FIDEயால் அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாக registered மற்றும் approved செய்யப்பட்ட tournaments இல் பங்கேற்க வேண்டும்.

அந்த tournamentஐ ஒழுங்குபடுத்தும் federation (இந்தச் சந்தர்ப்பத்தில் CFSL) தான், tournament results மற்றும் rating feesஐ FIDEக்கு சமர்ப்பிக்கும் பொறுப்பை உடையது.
