Forum for Rural Income and Environmental Development Services Forum for Rural Income & Environmental Development Services (FRIENDS) is a non-profit organization established in 2011.

Our core areas of work encompass Gender Economic Empowerment, Alcohol & drug prevention, Child rights and Environmental Development. Forum for Rural Income & Environmental Development Services Guarantee Limited is a nongovernmental organization in Sri Lanka established in year 2011 to uplift the living status of poor families. Livelihood development, women empowerment, promoting better environment

al practices and community mobilization are the main programme sectors the organization works with. FRIENDS works over 100 villages in 7 districts targeting vulnerable families and paying additional attention in women’s economic empowerment. Lack of opportunities and poor access to economic resources are the major issues needed to be addressed in improving status of women. FRIENDS focuses on economic empowerment by developing sustainable livelihood options which minimizes the gender gap. Rapid commercialization and materialistic pattern of living creates more strain on the environment. FRIENDS create awareness, promote environment friendly practices at community and house hold levels. FRIENDS also addresses the poverty related other issues prevailing in the rural communities such as usage of alcohol & drugs, poor access to services and information which affects development.

🎊 New Year Campaign 2026 🎊

Ilanthail Child Clubs, Karaveddy West Village, organized a New Year campaign against alcohol and drug abuse. The campaign was conducted in the Karaveddy Division, Jaffna District, to raise awareness among the community, especially children and youth, on the harmful effects of alcohol and drugs.

The Icing Cake Training Programme was successfully conducted at the Division Level in Kayts, Common Hall Town, with the participation of 24 participants.

The programme aimed to enhance participants’ practical skills in cake icing techniques, enabling them to improve their livelihood opportunities and small business potential.

The training was attended by officers from the Divisional Secretariat (DS), Assistant Divisional Programme (ADP), and Women Development Officer (WDO). In addition, representatives from the Vithatha Resource Centre and the Skill Development Unit also participated in the programme.

The Leadership Training Programme was successfully conducted on 03 April 2026 at Madulla Division in the Monaragala District, with the participation of 28 leaders. The programme aimed to enhance leadership skills, decision-making abilities, and teamwork among the participants, enabling them to effectively contribute to their respective communities and organizations.

A total of 30 participants attended the training programme. The objective of the training was to enhance participants’ skills and knowledge in resin-based product making, supporting their livelihood development. The Mental Health Awareness Programme was successfully held at the Pallepola Divisional Secretariat. The session was facilitated by Ms. Kumudini Disanayaka, Community Counselor for Mental Illness at the District Hospital, Matale, who served as the resource person.

A total of 71 participants attended the programme, including government officials such as the Divisional Secretary (DS), Development Officers (DO), Counseling Officer, Child Rights Promotion Officer (CRPO), Women Development Officer (WDO), Dhamma School teachers, and other community representatives. The programme provided valuable insights into mental health awareness and strengthened the capacity of participants to better understand and respond to mental health issues within their communities.

A technical training programme on bag making and purse making was successfully conducted at the Divisional Secretariat Office Hall in Mahakumbukkadawala on 17th, 20th, and 23rd March 2026. The programme was organized with the objective of enhancing vocational skills and promoting income-generating opportunities among women.

A total of 15 female participants actively took part in the training, gaining hands-on experience and practical knowledge in producing bags and purses. The sessions focused on developing technical skills, improving product quality, and encouraging entrepreneurship among the participants.

A street drama awareness programme on alcohol and drug prevention was successfully conducted in the Karaveddy Division, covering both Karaveddy West and East areas. The programme targeted mixed community groups with the objective of raising awareness on the harmful effects of alcohol and drug use and promoting positive behavioral change.

The awareness session was carried out through an engaging street drama performance by the Semmukam Drama Group, which effectively communicated key messages in an interactive and culturally appropriate manner. The use of drama helped to capture the attention of the audience and encouraged community participation and reflection.

A total of 200 community members participated in the programme, along with the support of 10 government officers who attended and contributed to the initiative.
