π A Message from a Global Medical Leader β Prof Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran π±π°π
The first 3 batches of SAITM had the honour of receiving the MBBS certificate from him when he was the Chief Guest at our inaugural SAITM Convocation in 2016 November β a moment that has stayed with us throughout our medical journey.
Recently, Prof Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran shared his deep perspective on private medical education in Sri Lanka in an interview with Jaffna Monitor. His insights are powerful, forward-looking, and highly relevant for alumni and all Sri Lankans passionate about strengthening our healthcare system.
π Key Takeaways from His Views:
π± Sri Lanka needs private medical education β he believes it should be part of our national education ecosystem, just like private institutes exist in engineering, business, and technology.
π Many Sri Lankan students who qualify academically still go abroad for medicine β not due to ability, but because of limited local opportunities. This costs families dearly and leads to a loss of precious foreign exchange.
π Private medical schools could:
Retain talented students here at home
Attract international students and bring new foreign income
Boost employment β from teaching staff to services supporting students
Raise standards across hospitals as teaching environments promote accountability and quality care.
π€ He also talks about the concerns around resistance to private medical education β fears of competition and misunderstandings β and suggests practical ways to balance opportunities for both local and international students while sustaining these institutions financially.
π As SAITM alumni, we know the value of accessible, quality medical education. These reflections from an eminent global physician challenge us to think boldly about how Sri Lanka can nurture and retain medical talent for the future.
Letβs keep the conversation going! π

There is a photograph somewhere in the archives of British medical history: a Tamil man from war-torn Sri Lanka, standing in the wood-panelled chambers of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, holding a gavel once wielded by some of the most powerful physicians in the Western world....
