Adaptations to the ocean 🌊🐢
Long ago, the ancestors of sea turtles spent much of their lives closer to land, carrying features better suited for walking than swimming. But over millions of years, the ocean began to shape them.
Slowly, their bodies started to change.
Their strong, clawed legs gradually transformed into long, powerful flippers, perfect for pushing through water. Their bodies became flatter and more streamlined, allowing them to glide smoothly through the sea with less resistance. Unlike land tortoise, sea turtles could no longer pull their heads and flippers completely into their shells. Instead of that, they evolved for speed and efficient swimming. Their powerful flippers helped them travel across entire oceans, riding currents that connected distant parts of the world.
They developed large lungs and the ability to hold their breath for long periods. Some species can remain underwater for several hours while resting.
Living in saltwater brought another challenge—too much salt. To survive, sea turtles evolved special salt glands near their eyes. These glands remove excess salt from their bodies, which is why sea turtles sometimes appear to “cry.” In reality, they are simply releasing salt collected from seawater.
Most sea turtles are ectothermic, meaning their body temperature depends on the surrounding environment. Over time, they developed remarkable ways to survive in both warm and cold waters. Their large bodies help retain heat, and they often stay near warm surface waters to absorb sunlight and regulate body temperature.
One extraordinary species, the leatherback sea turtle, evolved even further. Its thick fat layer, large body, and specialized blood circulation help conserve heat, allowing it to swim through waters far colder than most reptiles can survive in.
